You can't really deal with them unless they are undergoing treatment. Be sympathetic.. and kind. Walk away before they get angry. Try to be careful with what you say. That's all you can do for them...

My mother is a paranoid schizophrenic. When her meds are working, she can be treated like any other person. Shoot, she'll even laugh and make jokes about being a paranoid schizophrenic. When her medication is NOT working, however, you can do your best to reason with her but it really gets you nowhere.

It can be difficult but try gentle reasoning. Try to convince them to see a therapist. If it's only to the level of a personality disorder then psychotherapy can be very helpful. But if the paranoia reaches delusional proportions and insight is lost get the person to a psychiatrist. Full-blown delusions rarely respond to reasoning and the person usually needs medication.

Some people are just high strung and then you can tell them to chill out others you can't. All you can do is get them to take their medicine. My friends brother had to take pills he was okay when he took them. The problem is that he would feel so good that he felt like he did not need them, but he sure did.

Sneak up behind them and tap them on the shoulder over and over again until they get over it. That is some TOUGH LOVE.

I suggest sharing with the individual that their fear is only as large as they themselves make it. If they think hard on that which is feared, it becomes bigger. Don't think so much about that which scares you!
