"And God spoke all these words, saying: 'I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before Me.'" Exodus 20:1-3.

It's the first commandment. Jesus also sums up the 10 commandments in the New Testament: "And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. This is the first commandment." Mark 12:30

It will be hard to tell God you put him first if you weren't following these scriptures.

Now all has been heard;
here is the conclusion of the matter:
Fear God and keep his commandments,
for this is the whole duty of man.

For God will bring every deed into judgment,
including every hidden thing,

Mattew Ch.5
Seek first the kingdom of God and all other things will be given to you besides.

Now be aware this does not mean to neglect your legitimate pursuits but to do nothing against God and to do every thing else out of love and obedience to Him as opposed to selfish reasons.

One of the Ten Commandments states"tho shall not have any other graven image" meaning that we shouldn't put our faith in trust in other gods but Him. There's a good one. Get yourself a concordinance and cross reference it with your Bible. You'll be able to find the answers to which you seek.

Matt 6:32-34 32For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
