Unfortunately, cold turkey is the best way to kick any habit in my book. I know people vary. Sometimes people think it's easier to quit slowly. Personally, I think that's just a way to procrastinate the quitting.
I know it sucks right now. I've had to quit a few things before, that I was not just addicted to, but I wanted to keep doing! I was even angry with the guy who made me quit. It's very difficult. Just keep in your mind that one day this will be a long time ago, and you won't even care about the addiction anymore. It will be a thing of the past.
Everyday that you make it without fulfilling your addiction is one more day that you can look in the mirror and be proud of yourself. Hold your head high, pat yourself on the back, with the power of your own self-will, you can do anything.
For the meantime, do your absolute best to focus your mind in other directions. Don't let your mind sit their and want for your addiction. When you realize that you are thinking about it, push it as far from your mind as possible and occupy it doing something else that you love to do. Go swimming, fishing, play some basketball, play video games, watch a funny movie, go visit family....doesn't matter what you do...just make sure it's not your addiction. Even as difficult as it is, the results will be well worth your effort. Remember that.

I commend you for your desire to quit. Addiction is a horrible disease. I wish you the best of luck. Suggestions I have:
Drink plenty of fluids. Eat lots of protein and foods high in Omega 3. Also make sure you are getting plenty of fruits and veggies. Try to get some exercise. The more fat you burn, and the more you sweat, the faster you will excrete the substances that have built up in your system. But, be careful in the heat. During detox you are more likely to suffer heat exhaustion or worse. Start off slowly.
Best of luck!

What are you detoxing from? Cold turkey can be very very bad, the best thing to do is to wean yourself off, slowly lower the dose, like those patches for niccotine addiction. If it is an illegal substance you might need professional help and if it is perscribed medication I would talk to my dotor before trying it.

If you have a local information and referral number, call and find out if there are any local treatment centers for you. Or call you local hospital ER and ask to talk to the triage nurse. He or she can be an excellent source of information. Congratulations on your decision to detox. Keep in mind the years of pleasure ahead minus the addiction. Best wishes to you.

Detox is a good idea.. Whether it is pharmacologic, psychologic, or inpatient. You can go to therapy. You may need assitance with medication to help with the side effects.. You didn't say what kind of addiction... but I suggest going in to the doc just to make sure you are doing everything you can to stay clean.

sounds like you have a degrading habit you're seriously embarrased to announce.
to me it sounds a bit more physical or sexual in nature rather than chemical. pick up some sport that you like, spend LOTS of time, energy (and $$ if you can) into it. make new friends. most important: DON'T SPEND 2 MUCH TIME ALONE.

you can do many things, you can admit your self to a detox center or local hospital, you could consider 12 step meetings, you can gain a lot of info there or you can look at the possibilities of entering a treatment facility, ther is alot of info on the web
best of luck

Vitamins, lots of juice like cranberry and lots of spinach too. Drink iced teas, flavored ones and water. Exercise and sleep as much as you can, your body heals while you sleep. Take something like tylenol p.m. to help you sleep. Take Echinacea and golden seal as well, good luck buddy.
