As far as I know, there are two major ways to get extensions: 1.) gluing, 2.) braiding. You can have pieces of hair glued to your own hair - many people say this is the best way since it's the easiest to do - however, it is the worst for your hair. The glue makes your hair brittle, and will eventually break your hair. In braiding, some of your hair is braided close to your scalp, and hair tied into wefts (ie, the extensions) are sewn into the braid. This is the healthiest for your own hair - and it is painless and lasts longer.

It takes a while to get used to extensions, and you really have to learn how to take care of them (took me a really long time - about six months). They stay in for about six weeks or so... your braids will grow out (along with the rest of your hair), and you'll have to have the wefts taken out, and your hair re-braided.

I have very bright blonde hair, and I use 30" extensions so that the blonde hair reaches all the way down to my butt. It's fantastic, though they do require maintenance.

You can cet clips ins, they come out daily, you can have them glued onto your scalp I think those can last up to a month (maybe longer)depending on how good the glue is. The glued on ones can cause possible damage if the glue gets onto your hair, & you need to be sure you aren't allergic tot he glue. You can also have them sewn in, what they do is braid a track of your hair & then sew the extension to the track, or you can have the hair actually braided into your hair. With the braiding techniques you may get a headache after it's done due to the braids being pulled tight, there may be a bit of breakage on the hair as well. The braided ones can last for a few months, untill your hair grows out too much.

The best material to use for your extensions is human hair. You can style them any way you want, you can even dye or perm them!! With synthetic hair you can't even heat style them(they'll melt)

I think it really depends on how you get them put in. Are you getting them sewn in, glued? Tracks or bonded strand by strand? If you go to a professional and get them treated or touched up regularly, you shouldn't have a problem. As far as how long they'll stay in, it depends on how you get them put in and how well you care for your "new" hair once it's in.
