I have had a general seizure disorder as you describe since I was 13. Now I am 39. I have been on Tegretol for the last 19 years and have only had a handful of seizures (less than ten). Tegretol is great, but I just found out from my neurologist that it can reduce your bone density when taken for many years. Actually, he said they are finding all anti-convulsive drugs may effect bone density.

I realized early on that you have to accept your disorder and move on. Do not let it stop you from doing things that you've done. You can even drive, provided that you apprise tour state DMV of your condition. (This will keep you from ever getting into a lawsuit if you ever get into an accident while having a seizure.)
The one area that it does effect me is that I cannot go into discos or be in a place when strobe lights are present. Strobe lights have been known to trigger seizures and I certainly need to avert my eyes when I come across one, like at a wedding.)

One last thing to note, some people will never no you have the disorder unless you seize in front of them. My wife knows me for 12 years and I have never had a seizure in front of her.

Lastly, consider yourself lucky, some people have multiple seizures daily and they're on medication! It is people like us that are the fortunate ones. Lots of luck.

my son had epilepsy myoclonic, drop attacks, And Petit mal seizure — also known as absence seizure he was on Tegretol from the time he was about 3 years of age and by the time he went to high school he has out grown them. They said he was a slow learner. and would have to be in IM (special ED) high school but he was never he had out grown them and off his meds.He now has his HSC very proud and is studying I T and doing well. The epilepsy did very little damage to his brain but the drugs did make him slow. As the Tegretol is working for you that is good but do ask about something else if your studying or still learning at school. I would hate to see you slip back due to the meds your taking. Good luck.

Hi there, 12 years ago I was told I also had epilepsy. I used to have grand mal seizures and was put on Dilantin. I have not had a grand mal seizure for a long time , however I have had funny turns which are hard to explain, it's sort of like dejavu, sometimes the after effects are like being hit by a mack truck.

I'm glad to hear that your seizures are under control with Tegretol. While I don't have experience with this, I can pass along a support group where you can connect with others who have seizures. Unfortunately, their servers are down right now, but I promise, this address is worth bookmarking and keeping. They should be up and running soon, fingers crossed.

That sucks, can't they operate so you do not have to take pills? Don't forget to take your pills on time! Try an Epilepsy Center in your area. Look on line and in phone book, your doctor should know some groups.
