No WAY! I would never, ever, ever pick up anyone I do not know. Too many stories floating around about people killing you or robbing you or raping you.
It may not happen that often, but I do not want to be the one...

No you were not wrong. In today's world we have to be so careful. The world is full of crazies. People do anything to get what they want even use their children so just because she was a woman with children does not mean she was innocent. I think you did the right thing -- you gave her money to help her and what she does with it is out of your hands. You were able to find a way to offer help while protecting your own family from any potential danger. Way to go---there are not many kind helpful people left in the world but I am glad to know there are still a few. God will repay you for your generosity one day.

Well my definite answer is yes. I live in Australia less crazies over here. I spent 3 years from 13 to 16 hitch hiking all over the country I met fascinating people talked to all sorts of different people it truly was an amazing experience that I wouldn't change for the world. I would pick up a hitch hiker and do on every opportunity. I'm more worried for the hitch hiker and the people who may pick them up than the hitch hiker hurting me. Despite your fears you helped in the best way you could by giving her money. It's nice to know even in our increasingly paranoid world there are still compassionate caring people out there.

I would never ever pick up a hitchhiker, you just never know who you're dealing with. I have called the police though, if they're really someone down on their luck, the police know of the resources available to get them off the streets, and if they're not honest and looking to do someone harm, then the police are trained to deal with that as well.
Bless you for giving her $$, but I wouldn't have even done that. She could've grabbed you through the open window.

Hitchhikers are creepy. You can never tell which ones really are just having a bad day, or which ones mean harm. I have only picked up a hitch hiker once, and she was a pregnant lady, looking like she was about to burst in the TX heat.

We were broke down on highway and someone passing by called SC DOT for us but no one offer to stop and help. Another time I had my kids and we were broke down at 10 at night and a stranger and his son offered us a ride. Just as I was about to use his phone though very scared;because he did not want to give us a ride either, a friend pulled up and said he would take us home. Even though it happen to me I STILL WOULD NOT pick up anyone I did not know. It's too dangerous. You just don't know.

You did the right thing by NOT picking her up... she could have been using the kid as a "taunt" for people to pick them up.. who knows what she has or doesnt have conceiled on her... i know it might make you feel bad that you are driving away and this poor woman and child are walking... but better safe than sorry right? self preservation in a situation like that is the way to go..

I do pick up hitch hikers, but not when my kids are in the car. Mostly I pick up other college students, or a couple of people I see out on the road day after day. I've had a couple of close calls, so you are right not to do it.

You did the best right thing you could do under the circumstances. I would have called the Highway Patrol on my cellphone and had them investigate the sighting. I'd want someone doing that for me if I faced endless miles walking on the roadways---espicially at night.
I've heard of people getting violently assaulted, raped....and even killed (stabbed dead), from transient hitch-hikers ( of BOTH sexes, male and female) who murdered those kind hearted, but not so bright, people.
