I do believe that a person who is clever enough, and patient enough, can use bits and peices of the document we call the Bible to support just about any idea they wish to put forth

Just about. That's the problem with what is known as "proof texting." You take one verse or a portion of a verse out of context, and claim that it means something that often bears no relationship to the contextual meaning.
I saw an example of this just the other day on the Answer board. It doesn't do any good to explain the intended meaning, because people generally only look at the little blurb of text.
In order to understand the Bible, it has to be approached as a single entity--with many authors, to be sure--but God inspired. If you study the book as a whole, a lot of the seeming contradictions and paradoxes melt away.

I would have to say yes... undoubtly ... :) the Bible is one of the most historical accurate books ever written and of course why not God him self moved upon select men to write what he need to be said ... God's word is a gift and as someone else put sometimes the answer will just jump out and bite you.. and there are other times you really have to do your research and really dig further into scripture. As far as justifing any im/moral postion it depends on what postion(s) your looking to justify... I would love to just discuss this issue with you... I am not looking for a debate or argument just maybe some way to "resolve" this issue :) !!! I hope I've been able to help a little :) !!! Feel free to contact me at ashleycs87@yahoo.com :) !!!

I would not use the bible for any guidance, as it has been changed to suit what people thought at that time, and not what it was suppose to be.
We are all here as Spiritual beings having and Earthly experience, we know in our hearts what is wrong and what is right.
So go with what you feel is right.
Just love and accept everyone for the person they are.
We all have so many lessons to learn for our own personal growth.
There are no guidelines everyone is on a different journey.
We are our own Judge, Jury, and Executioner when our Judgment Day comes.
Take in what feels right for you, don't believe what people want you to believe.
It is up to you in the end
Love & Blessings
Milly

Taken out of context it has justified some pretty weird stuff. I won't say which scripture was used(cause I don't want anyone to start that again) but a Group called "The Lambs of God" in England about 20 years ago used scripture to justify incest! It was not the intent of the scripture in fact I don't think they even used the full sentence-totally out of context in other words!

The following is copied from Bible - the Book of Zechariah - 12th Chapter.
Please read and compare todays situation in Lebanon and Israel.
1 This is the word of the LORD concerning Israel. The LORD, who stretches out the heavens, who lays the foundation of the earth, and who forms the spirit of man within him, declares: 2 "I am going to make Jerusalem a cup that sends all the surrounding peoples reeling. Judah will be besieged as well as Jerusalem. 3 On that day, when all the nations of the earth are gathered against her, I will make Jerusalem an immovable rock for all the nations. All who try to move it will injure themselves. 4 On that day I will strike every horse with panic and its rider with madness," declares the LORD. "I will keep a watchful eye over the house of Judah, but I will blind all the horses of the nations. 5 Then the leaders of Judah will say in their hearts, 'The people of Jerusalem are strong, because the LORD Almighty is their God.'
6 "On that day I will make the leaders of Judah like a firepot in a woodpile, like a flaming torch among sheaves. They will consume right and left all the surrounding peoples, but Jerusalem will remain intact in her place.
7 "The LORD will save the dwellings of Judah first, so that the honor of the house of David and of Jerusalem's inhabitants may not be greater than that of Judah. 8 On that day the LORD will shield those who live in Jerusalem, so that the feeblest among them will be like David, and the house of David will be like God, like the Angel of the LORD going before them. 9 On that day I will set out to destroy all the nations that attack Jerusalem.

The bible is more of a guide line. It has been interpreted too many times ever since it was first published. To get the straight facts, consult a priest.

Without understanding the history and the reasoning you can make the bible prove anything you want. It does "believers" a disservice.

No, it really can't. It's just used as a tool to bolster someones faith. Some Christians who call them selves Christians have not even read the thing the whole way through.
