What happens if a (adult) person unties his/her belly button, and why don't alot of people untie them?

i think it pops out and it looks odd. nothing will come spewing out though. ive seen a baby with a belly button not tucked in. it looks like a small handle coming out of the belly button. almost the size of a thumb. very strange.
