Finally an answer to the question..

Once upon a time all dogs were invited to
a party. When they arrived at the party
they were required to leave their
butts at the door. All the dogs hung them
on hooks by the door.

The party went on and the dogs were
having a great time. All of a sudden
a fire broke out. The dogs raced to
the door and grabbed whichever butt
they could grab first.
In an effort to find their own butt.
that is why, to this very day,
dogs sniff each other's butts!!!!

They are in fact sniffing each other to determine friend or foe, the sex and also if its a female- whether she is in heat( sexually active) Animals like to leave their scents when they mark their territories so this iis another way of determining if the other is an intruder or a friend. When an animal enters anothers territory the dominant one ascertained after the initial scuffles will generally conducted the initial sniff.The loser of the initial skirmish will surrender to this as a sign of submission.;

hehe, didn't you every watch Doctor Doolitle? He explains that and much more. Maybe you and your friends can have a slumber party and ask your parents to rent that movie for you.

Just think, when you are in a moving vehicle and a dog is chasing it, he is probably trying to sniff your butt!

It's their way to greeting each other, kinda like we shake hands or hug. They may like poop, but that's not why the sniff each other.
