Yes! A good quality one can significantly reduce the number of allergens in the air of the room in which it is placed. I also recommend getting your air ducts professionally cleaned and using plastic covers for bedding underneath the sheets. In severe cases, go for hard wood floors. The more preventatives you have, the better you will feel. (at least in your own bubble...er...house!)

My brother who has severe asthma and allergies told me that witihout his filters he would be coughing a lot more at night especially, and that he wouldn't live without them.

interestingly enough we just bought one 2 days ago, it does seem to be helping somewhat. You also need to remove all the allergins if you can.
