First make sure your family isn't exposed to someone who has lice and isn't being treated...if so, you will never get rid of them because you are being re-infected constantly. A louse comb might be your only recourse...see below.
To remove lice, you can purchase a product otc at your drugstore such as quell, nix, pronto, etc. You can also buy a special comb and some products even include this comb. Be sure to also clean all the bedding and towels in hot water and vacuum any padded furniture as well every day until the infestation is cured. LIce can live for a day or so and their eggs can survive up to a week when OFF the human host so cleaning properly helps contain the possibility of re-investation or spreading the lice to others.
As for the comb, you can buy special de-lousing combs. Follow the directions exactly. You also need to clean the comb frequently during the combing process. This process takes several hours a night and must be repeated every day until no more active lice are seen (will take several days, possibly a week). You comb one small section at a time.
Every day, be sure to clean all your combs and brushes to dispose of any lice or nits.

Pour olive oil on your hair (olive oil natural hair treatment) comb through with a fine metal lice comb - this will take about 1/2hour - hour to get all the eggs and nits out. Sit in the sun or under a hair dryer for about 15 minutes - this will fry any left over eggs/nits and wash out with shampoo - this may take 2 - 3 shampoos. No chemicals and your hair looks shiny and feels soft afterwards. If you get more lice, try leaving a small amount of olive oil in your hair as the lice can't grab hold of the hair with oil in it

Go to a doctor, they'll give you a perscription for shampoo. Either that or talk to a pharmasist. They maybe able to point out a shampoo or product that can help you.
remember to put all hats, toys, clothing, and bedding in the wash and don't said combs or anything that touches your head with others. It may actually be best if you throw away any hair brushes you have away.
And if all else fails don't wash your hair for a few weeks, lice hate dirty hair.

My daughter came home from daycare with it and it took six months to get rid. I was so frustrated, but it finally went away after many purchases of lice shampoo.
