Park the car off the road. If it's parked on a public way it must be tagged and insured.
Remove the tags and surrender them to the DMV. Make sure you get the receipt from the DMV and keep it in a safe place!
Cancel the insurance.

if you take the plates off the car and bring them to the dmv, you should make sure you have a ride home in a car that HAS license plates. Fact is no matter what, you can't drive the car without plates OR without insurance. So I don't think it matters what order you do this in - just once you do it, you can't drive the car. You might as well end the insurance first because that's the part that costs you money.

thats a tough one, ct suspended my licence for failure to cary insurance on a car that i junked!!! the worst part was i forgot to turn the plates in, so it cost me over 400 bucks to get my licence back over nothing! call the d.m.v just to be on the safe side regardless of the answers you get here:)
