I am comming off Seroquel and cannot sleep. Today my Dr. Rx'd Remeron to sleep. I was just wondering if anyone has used it and how it works and does it cause weight gain like Seroquel? Since off the Seroquel for 2 wks, I already lost 4 pounds.....I hate to reverse the process now. Any info would be appreciated.
Thank You

Definitely causes weight gain. Took the edge off my suicidal thoughts somewhat. Made me a zombie. But other than that, it's just another useless drug that misguided doctors throw at symptoms rather than looking for a cure. I've prepared a little webpage regarding antidepressants. Feel free to check it out:

Remeron is used more as a sleep aid than as an antidepressant. It can cause some weight gain, but NOTHING like Seroquel. You'll be able to wake up and function on the Remeron and won't be groggy.
And don't listen to people who tell you that you don't need meds. When you have a chemical imbalance and don't sleep for days at a time, you do need something to help.

I have taken both...Remeron makes you sleep and it is VERY DIFFICULT to wake up from this. My first dase was 15mg and I felt like I could sleep FOREVER..When I stopped taking it I was at 60mg and that was barely putting me out..It is a very good antidepressant..It does have the weight gain sorry...But seroquel is an antipsychotic and Remeron is a antidepressant? I took them at the same time..Is that all that you are on? Good luck with the meds just begin taking remeron on a day that you can sleep..It takes about 2-3 weeks to become fully aware of the effects..

i gained 20 some odd pounds on the stuff. i don't know that is the case for everyone. i don't know that it helped w/depression, but man i sure slept. i didn't wake up at all during the night and i can't tell you how wonderful it was. about the 1st week of taking it, i was really tired. usually, medicines don't knock me out like that. (i take tylenol pm during the day and go about my buisness.) so it was a little suprising for me. i think actually sleeping helped w/depression. although the weight that i gained kinda nullified the sleeping. being 5' there's not much place for weight to go. i've also taken resperdal, which after about 2 weeks stopped making me drowsy and i was itchy(allergic i found out). i had to take it in addition to a benadryl or something of the like. i hope you have a great night's sleep. if you dream, i noticed that while on remeron, i didn't recall dreams. no biggie, just an observation. hope this helps.

Remeron is different from the others (Paxil etc.) in that it adds norepinephrine to the mix. Paxil=SSRI, Remeron=SSNRI. Remeron is the only anti-depressant with which I felt any noticeable effect. As far as weight gain, that's never been an issue for me. I was on it only for a few months - I couldn't afford it, I was paying cash - but I think it's available now as a generic (Mirtazapine.) Effexor is a similar drug.

Drugs are scary. If God had intended for us to take prescription drugs, we'd come out of a brown plastic bottle with a childproof top, not our mother's wombs. Get of that junk ASAP, and you'll be the better and stronger person for it.
