No one ever really knows the answer to this question.
When the time comes -- if it ever comes -- some people do whatever's necessary to protect the lives of others, and some people don't.
It's kind of like patriotism. Too many people think that patriotism is the wrapping of oneself in the flag, the noisy, boisterous, chest-thumping sort so often found in the U.S., but it's really the quietest kind of emotion, in which you just know that, if your country calls, you'll be there and do your duty.

In the right situation, yes...without hesitation
And wouldn't matter if it was a relative or not as some people so tactfully point out. Doesn't that stranger have family?!?, what about their parents, or if they have kids? I damn sure couldn't just sit back and watch them die and live with myself later knowing that I had tried to do NOTHING!

Yes, I would. I will give my life to save my family, my God. I am ready to die for the ones I love.

I almost have on 2 occasions, but it was a very quick immediate response that I did not have time to think.
I hope that I would have the courage to pay that price should it be needed some time.

John 15:12-14 (New King James Version)
12 This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.
Amazing love huh?

To be honest, I doubt it. I don't think I do have it in me to put myself out quite like that. But then again, to be honest, I have never been in such a situation so I can't really say for sure.
