i have a 4 month old australian shephard. he is so uncontrollable that my parents want to place him in a pound.

i cant afford to pay for obedience training classes. so i'll need to train him before my parents turn him in.

please help me fix the following problems:

1. he splashes his water bowl. he'll splash and splash until there is no more water. then he's thirsty.... kiddie pool don't work cause he splashes all the water out too.

2. he runs in to the house all wet and muddy whenever the door is opened. parents get mad of course.

3. he chases and jumps on my kittens. they get so pissed they try to scratch his eyes out. so skin around his eyes bleed from being scratched.

4. he eats anything and everything. he's eaten dead snakes, plants, cat poo, etc. and he ends up throwing up.

1) maybe just set his water bowl down for him 4-5 times a day or something so he doesn't always have access to it to mess it up
2) when you open up the door if he tries to run into the house, then tell him no firmly and spray him with a water gun (not to be mean, but to disuade him from undesirable behavior.) when you do decide to let him in the house, have him sit or stay calm for a little bit before entering
3) always supervise him while he's in the house, if he antagonizes the kittens then tell him no and spray him with the water gun or maybe put him in the kennel for a little bit
4) pick up the backyard every other day or daily so he doesn't have as much time to eat crap. be sure that you are feeding him the proper amount of puppy food and that there are chew toys in the backyard to play with
Be sure to take him on walks daily or at least several times a week.
Good luck. I hope this helps.

It sounds like he is being a puppy to me. more toys might help the bowl playing but my pup has plenty of toys and ghe still loves his water bowl to splash in. If hes an outdoor dog of course he is going to run inside at every chance. Why not offer to clean up after him and do a GOOD job this might help a little. As for the kittens its something that he will learn to keep away from my puppy has learnt respect for the parrot and cats but it did take a few bleeding noses for him to learn. As for the eating everything thing mine eats pine cones or at least chews them into small sharp peices for me to step on. Its part of being a puppy. You could maybe crate train him so that he is not eating things that are bad for him and getting so drty. But in th elong run these are all things that you will have to take time training him not to do, and if that is not going to happen with your family then maybe finding him a new home with people that are prepared to put in the time and effort needed is the best thing for him. Maybe your parents will let you go to the pound to choose an older already trained dog.

I have a couple of words for you - Crate Training....for your dog's sake put him in a crate. When you have time to watch his every move take him out. Australian Shepherds are very smart and usually very easy to train, he'll grow out of the water thing. Cat poo will always be a dog treat with sprinkles so hide the cat box. If you can't afford a crate use a leash, put the leash on your ankle and never let the dog get away with anything. I have 3 dogs and all of them I used a combination of the crate/leash training and they are all pretty good.

Unfortunately, these are puppy-type behaviors and the thing that will help the most is time. You can also sign up for a traing class, like Puppy Kindergarten, at Petsmart or another dog trainer.

I would definitely keep kittens and a large breed puppy separated to no one gets mauled or gets blinded. Get a baby gate.

If you do choose to give him up, check www.petfinder.com for local rescue groups in your area. The pound you take him to may not be "No Kill" and larger breed dogs have a very hard time getting placed.

Older dogs that are past the puppy stage are always available for adoption.

You got a hearding breed dog and do not have the time and knowledge to devote to it. It was a wrong breed to get for your family life. Not much you can do except walk hima LOT!! Watch the Dog Whisperer and he will show you in every episode HOW to walk the dog. Then develpo games and activities for the dog to keep him busy.
Hope he doessn't end up at the pound, but if he does...please do not get another dog. The parents do not sound like they understand the ownership of dogs.

1) get a outdoor water spigot
2) do not let him get wet and muddy
3) play with him while the kittens are around and teach him how to play with them
4)keep plenty of toys around and keep his food bowl full
5) most important than all these answers is play with your dog buy a training book and perhaps a training crate

you should creat the dog when he is home alone and creat him at night for sleeping. then when you are home put the dog on a leash INSIND AND OUTSIDE and you hold the leash and nicely teach him manners. use treats every time he does something the way you want him to do it. even if you make up some "good boys" like for sitting. just "catch" him sitting and say "sit!" good boy and give the treat. soon he will "try" to do things good for the treat! get it? no punishments. just treats for good behaviors. this works. good luck.

He's a WILD ANIMAL!! Doing WILD ANIMAL=UN-TRAINED PUPPY THINGS! Because YOU never taught him ANYTHING!!

Sounds to me he'd be better off given to SOMEBODY who WILL train him before he's TOTALLY RUINED!!! YOU sure appear UN-WILLING& UNABLE to do anything.
