Well, yes and no.

You have to keep in mind that early pharmacists were really alchemists. Rx was put on bottles as a symbol with magickal and astrological purposes. It became a sort of tradition.

By the time the Romans got their hands on it, they changed the symbol slightly and decided it was an abbreviation for the Latin word 'recipe', which is the imperative version of the verb 'take'. In other words, it meant 'take this' (must have cut down on instructions printed on the bottle).

Eventually it lost even this meaning. People still associated the Rx symbol thingy with prescriptions and medicine, so it stays there to this day. In the United States, they have legislated another meaning into Rx - it signifies a substance that can only be obtained with a prescription from a licenced medical practitioner.

So make of it what you like! I usually just refer to the old mystical Rex when I see it, myself!

Yes, Rx pronounces Prescription but it actually stands for "Referred & Examined" by the Doctor.

yes Rx drugs are those drugs which needs to have a prescription... drug stores wont dispense those types of drugs without any prescription...
