I know of two people that have denied the faith even though they declare the faith to be true.
This I am sure is common in any religion. Why do people do it? Do they have a lot of pressure from their family to stay with the one religion that he/she was raised in?
Give me stories if you would like.

The answer is already hard to read, they do treat women as equals. Ask any woman in the church!

Well firstly, brain-washing most likely does not come into play. We are discussing educated and psychologically balanced people here.
Secondly, it has nothing to do with how women are treated.

That aside, people ofttimes act according to the priority of will and desire despite what they might recognize as true intellectually. Certain people might mentally recognize the soundness of Orthodox doctrine and moral teachings, etc, but fail to act on this knowledge because they are too attached to their own passions and sinful inclinations. The inclination to live pleasurably or to fit in or to sleep in on Sundays... Excuses are as varied as the people that have them.
What must happen for a person to commit themselves to the Church is for their theoretical knowledge to be united with "spiritual" knowledge or "knowledge of the heart". This person in some way more or less experiences the divine truth of the faith and are convicted in their hearts. Having this wondrous glimpse and this immaculate taste they want nothing but to be closer to its Source. The person becomes willing to abandon themselves in their desires and appetites for the sake of their Beloved.

By Orthodox -- do you mean Catholic or Eastern Rite? Both have claims to orthodoxy.

I could never be part of an orthodox church -- because they do not treat women as equals.

I could never be part of a non-orthodox church -- because they are all heretics.

As an ex-Catholic, I understand all of the real reasons not to be Catholic. But so many Protestants are completely ignorant of the beliefs of the Catholic Church. Their claims about what Catholics believe are laughable.

The undeniable truth is that if you are going to be Christian, you should belong to the church that Jesus created (one of the orthodox branches) -- all other Christian religions are man-made.

Claims that Catholicism is an abomination are claims that Jesus made a mistake in founding it.

I'm sure a brainwashed little boy of 12 living in Iran would ask the same question about Islam. Most fundamentalists believe that their religion is the only true one and through brainwashing and upbringing cannot fathom why anyone else would believe differently from them.

YOU say it's so obvious. YOU say that the Orthodox Church is the only church. YOU say anyone who disagrees is denying the faith. Who are YOU?

I go with what GOD says, not what YOU say.
