Jesus had no siblings. James was likely His cousin, or another relative.
"Brother" has a very wide meaning in the Bible. In at least 100 places, it's used for relationships that clearly did not involve siblings.
So, there is no conclusion to be drawn from use of the word "brother" to describe James.
But there is plenty of other Biblical evidence that Mary was a perpetual virgin, and had no other children except Jesus.
For instance, when the angel Gabriel greeted her and announced that Mary would conceive and bear a child, Mary asked "how can this be?"
Mary was an engaged woman, so this question makes no sense at all -- unless she had taken a lifelong virginity vow.
Otherwise, there's no reason why an engaged woman would have to ask "how" she was to have a child -- any other engaged woman would have assumed that the child would come about "the natural way" sometime after her marriage.
But Mary didn't assume that -- which is telling.
Also, Jesus entrusted care of His mother to the disciple John as He hung from the cross.
John is not one of the four "brothers" of Jesus mentioned in the Bible.
If Jesus truly had brothers, why would He entrust care of His widowed mother to a man outside the family? This would have been highly unusual.
Also, no one except Jesus is identified as a "son of Mary," and none are IDed as "son of Joseph." This was how people were almost always identified back then, and in the Bible.
If Jesus had actual siblings, it's strange that none of them are IDed as a son or daughter of Mary or Joseph. Very strange indeed.

Catholics believe that Jesus was an only child. English speaking Protestants believe that he had brothers.
Why the discrepency? There are two reasons. One is that there is a translation problem in the KJV -- the other is that Protestants threw out the parts of the Bible that give evidence that Mary remained a virgin.
First -- the translation problems. In the KJV, Jesus refers to his brothers. However, in the original Greek, the word used just means "close relative" and would be used for a cousin as well as a brother. Second -- the KJV says that Mary had no relations with Joseph until Jesus was born. In English, this phrase connotes that they had relations after his birth. But in the original Greek, there is no such connotation. The statement is merely asserting the virgin birth of Jesus, and says nothing about what happened later.
In Maccabees, there is a passage where Mary frets about getting married to Joseph -- because she made a vow to God to remain a virgin. Religious scholars feel that if the mother of Jesus made a vow to God -- she would keep it -- therefore she would remain a virgin for the rest of her life.
Catholics recognize Maccabees as the holy word of God and include it in their Bible. Protestants do not -- because Martin Luther edited the Bible and excluded it.

Yes James was his half brother
Galatians 1:19: "But I saw none of the other apostles except James, the Lord's brother."
(Matthew 13:35; Mark 6:3;)Jesus had three other brothers in addition to James. They were Joses, Simon and Judas (Matthew 13:55). The Lord's sisters are also mentioned, but not by name (Matthew 13:56).

Yes.
Mat 13:55 Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas?
Mat 13:56 And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this [man] all these things?
He is a) the carpenter's son, b)His mother's name is Mary and c)He has brothers and sisters. These are obviously not "half-brothers", but Mary and Joseph had a normal married life, complete with at least six more kids AFTER Jesus. The Bible does not say that Mary was a "perpetual virgin"...it says that Joseph did not touch her UNTIL she had brought forth her first born son. (The perpetual virgin bit was tossed into the mix by the RCC)

Yes he had two brothers, one named James. James may have become a disciple of Jesus. Find and check this in a common every day language bible -at the library or try Wikipedia. Jesus 's other brother 'may have been ' John.

sure. Mathew 13:fifty 5, Mark 6:3, Luke 24:10 all say that James is the son of Mary and Joseph and the brother of Jesus. even in spite of the undeniable fact that Jesus become fairly God's Son , he become raised as an elder brother in a classic family individuals.

Yes, Matthew 13: 55 Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? Matthew 13: 56 And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things? Mary had children after Jesus was born but He was the first born. Matthew 1: 25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

Matt. 13: 54 Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed. "Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?" they asked. 55"Isn't this the carpenter's son? Isn't his mother's name Mary, and aren't his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? 56 Aren't all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?"
So, Jesus had 4 brothers and at least 3 sisters. Makes me wonder why Catholics worship the "Virgin" Mary, when it's obvious she wasted no time gettin' it on with Joseph after she popped out Jesus.

yes it is noted that james is the brother of Jesus, but it is a common linguistic manner to call cousins as 'brothers'...some countries even today do so like in the south pacific and the middle east, where cousins are called 'brothers and sisters'.
Christ was born of the Virgin mary, and after giving birth to Christ, she remained a virgin, and never had any other kids after that.
St mary, however, she did have a sister, also called Mary. Reason why the parents called her Mary too is because when they gave birth to St mary (Mother of Christ) they got her in their old age and they felt that she was a gift from God, so they offered her to the temple to grow up there, and God gave them another daughter as a reward, and they called her Mary too. This second Mary later was married and gave birth to other childeren who would become the cousins of Christ (according to the flesh), one of which is James who later became a disciple of Christ. That is why they refer to these relatives as ' his brothers and sisters'.
I hope this helps...God bless you.

Actually, half brothers is more like the term. James was one of them, who is believed to have written the book of James.
