I think Scientology is helping millions of people in the world to better themselves and achieve spiritual enlightenment.
The church also sponsors numerous organizations that work to get people off drugs, rehabilitate criminals, teach kids how to learn, teach people right from wrong and fight for psychiatric reform.
Scientology is unique among religions because it is an applied religious philosophy -- it is something that you do, not something that you simply have faith in. In Scientology, what's true is what you have observed to be true. You get to apply the principles of Scientology to your life and see for yourself that Scientology works.
Scientology teaches that people have a thrust toward the eternal, but does not have any specific dogma about the nature of the divine. People of all faiths can and do study and apply Scientology to improve their lives.
The aims of Scientology are noble. As expressed by L. Ron Hubbard the aims of Scientology are a civilization without insanity, without criminals and without war, where the able can prosper and honest beings can have rights and where man is free to rise to greater heights.

Scientology is a new religion started by Ron Hubbard. Ron Hubbard was an avid science fiction writer with a vivid imagination. He came to the conclusion that to make lots of money, the best way was to start your own religion. That is exactly what he did. It made him famous and rich. He was a biggamist, and liar as well as a storyteller. Today his religion is a money making machine. It is not Christian. It is nothing more than a cult. Before you ever get involved in any 'new' religion. Be sure to check it out thoroughly. If you don't know if it is a cult.... you can check it out on line...That's what I did.
Hubbard called the soul " thetan", derived from the Greek letter meaning "thought." When you are no longer filled with negative 'engrams,' you are then considered 'clear'. Many ignorant movie stars has bought into this 'religion' because it is fashionable in their circles...But some have also gotten smart and opted out.
I discovered that this organization charges its members thousands of dollars to discover so called "engrams" or negative emotions.... and they try to measure these emotions or feelings and help you get free of them.... The sad thing is and that is the sad punchline of Scientology: that Scientologists spend years, and often quite a great deal of money, to rid themselves of something which they never had until they joined Scientology. They convice you that you have something then charge you to get rid of it.
If you need to be free of sin, or guilt, all you need is the free gift that God offers us through Jesus Christ....his forgiveness of all our sins. He made us and so He can help us understand better that any cult religion who we are are what we need.
Without a doubt, Scientology is one of the most controversial new religious movements in the modern world. Few other groups have been investigated and accused of wrongdoing at various times by so many government agencies (including the Internal Revenue Service, the Food and Drug Administration, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation). Also, few other groups have received as much negative publicity as Scientology.
Significantly, much of this negative publicity comes from its legal battles with critics. In recent years, legal battles have focused on critics publishing Scientology's sacred texts on the Internet. In 1999 a lawsuit involving copyright-infringement was settled between the Church and Boulder, Colorado-based F.A.C.T. NET, Inc. 31 The suit included more than 1,900 copyright infringements and both sides have accumulated nearly $7 million in legal fees during the four year battle, according to an April 1 Denver Post article. F.A.C.T. NET, Inc. agreed to cease posting any works by L. Ron Hubbard or any Scientology organization on their site. Additionally, the Internet service must hand over any produced CD-ROM discs and other materials to the Church.
Scientologies practice of suing those who come against them has not only brought them millions, but public attention, and also serves to intimidate those who do not have as much money or clout as Scientology.

it has some good points actually...
stating that being healthy is a state of mind, dont use medications to cure yourself of mental anguish, answers are found within (and not due to psychologists), communities are congruent to those who inhabit that community, you are responsible for your own mental peace
but it is founded by a man Ron L. Hubbard who had over 114 occupations in his lifetime, one of which was a science fiction writer. And it is pricey, dues are paids at the beginning of each month or annually (however you choose), but hey collections plates are passed around every sunday.
if it provides tranquilty of the soul...i see nothing wrong with it...its not my place to judge...
its only my job to make my own decisions

I think $cientology is harming about 100,000 people in the world to get them to do what the Church of Scientology wants them to do, namely give them money, pretending they are developing as a person to unbefore seen states of enlightenment, which also brings more intelligence, more happiness, more ability, more insight, better memory, able to resist diseases & get over conditions, etc. Shame no one has ever demonstrated any claim by scientology in this regard. Shame they won't allow their methods to be opened up to true scientific scrutiny. Dianetics, the precursor to scientology (and not as bad) had an official study done on it, which concluded it did not do what it said it did.

For evidence they aren't 'helping millions' see here:
http://www.clambake.org/archive/COS_members.html
Here is also an article on the techniques of scientology written by an ex-member:
http://www.clambake.org/archive/techniques/
The Church has numerous front groups whose main purpose is to gain recruits, funding, & to improve the image for the Church of Scientology. They don't often tell people of the connection to and the use of scientology. Sometimes they will obviously be seen to be doing good stuff, and the people involved are there because they want to help. The church that sent them there had other motives.

Scientology takes up a persons whole life so they don't have time to evaluate it properly, or think critically of it, there is intense pressure to 'improve your case' and get 'wins', and help 'clear the planet'. There information from other sources is severly limited especially anything critical of scientology. Many members also become staff members at some time or another where everything they do, everyone they meet & what they are thinking about is all to do with scientology. In scientology while they tout personal experience, if you don't gain benefit from a course that is your fault and you need to correct the problem that stopped you benefiting from scientology. So as long as you agree with scientology it is true for them.
It claims people of all faiths can join scientology and retain their beliefs. This is simply not true as this tape of hubbard's voice will prove. quote: "There is no christ".
http://www.lermanet2.com/cos/nochrist.wav
Scientology also believes past lives provide much of your current problems right back millions of years ago into human's evolutionary past, and also your souls adventures throughout the universe going back trillions or even quadrillions of years. And because it is true for scientology it is true for you when you make up this stuff during an auditing session because hubbard told you that you would. Past lives is in conflict with some of the world's major religions. You cannot progress up scientology levels without going into your past lives and then eventually the space opera of Xenu the intergalactic space lord. http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/xenu
Here is a court trial where the OT levels were submitted as evidence:

The aims of Scientologists are noble, but the Church only makes them believe they are achieving this aim. As a previous answer said, it makes them believe they are improving problems they never had. It also makes them think they are improving as a person, while never actually demonstrating any improvements. As the link on the techniques points out, trance-like sessions can induce a euphoric feeling that makes you think you have had a 'win' or spiritual advancement, when in fact you can get similar to this looking at a stunning scenary or staring at a wall for 2-3 hours without any stimuli or movement.
Also did you notice in the quote from Hubbard he said only "the able can prosper and honest beings can have rights"? Odd that I thought everyone was entitled to prosper and have rights no matter what their ability or dis-ability for that matter.
See here for video's concerning scientology, where amongst other things you can see first hand some of their behaviour in regards to critics:
http://www.xenutv.com
I think the Church of Scientology is a destructive cult.
I personally think scientology is a bizarre belief system from a bizarre man - but I am not against people believing in what they want. I am against the practises of the Church of Scientology. I do disagree with a lot of the teachings from Hubbard. I can also see from his history that he was not capable of producing what he said he did, he has a history of lying, deceiving, failing, mental instability, criminal behaviour and more, till the day he died and i'm expected to believe he found new insights into the human mind never before discovered? Please....

Well, I find it all rather odd, but then again, some people find Christianity odd too. If people want to pay out the nose to some science fiction writer, I suppose that is their prerogative. It's not for me though.
