I searched out EVERY ceremony site (chapel) possible in my area so I could make an informed decision. Then I ended up going with the one I thought I wanted in the first place. Check your yellow pages under weddings and start visiting the sites. We have them on golf courses, in parks, Victorian homes, and some reception sites have their own in our area.

I've been to weddings in churches, I've been to weddings on the beach, at DisneyWorld, in a park, you name it. Just start looking around, if you have a nice public park close by you can probably get your ceremony site for not much $$.

The Knot is great. Go to your local message boards -- you have brides and recently married women right there to share everything with! This was how we found our photographer.
Ask around about officiants. While the location is important, the officiant is even more important. You want to make sure you'll be working with someone who is compatible with you and your fiance. (Especially if you have to go through counseling sessions!)
