I think it would be suicide for North Korea to attempt this. They would first make sure the world knew that their long range missile was perfected and they had a nice stockpile ready for launching in order to keep foreign influence in a Korean war to a minimum. The gunshots were probably made as a psychological tactic to show that they are not afraid of war... kind of like how an animal would expand it's fur to look bigger.

They may be. North Korea has been preparing for an invasion for many years. North and South are technically still at war.
However, there is nothing unusual about the Hezbollah kidnapping to suggest that Iran was directly involved to create a diversion. Hezbollah has kidnapped before, I think Israel's extreme response surprised everyone.
Yet, Iran may see a benefit from it after it happened and North Korea is known for wanting attention.
I just don't think Kim Jong would be THAT stupid to invade South Korea right now. He would like the support of China before he made a move. China is not completely happy with Kim right now and an invasion may anger China even more. China has some stability in the region right now and would like to continue to grow.
Of course, it is all up to Kim Jong and Iran. If Iran continues to rile up the Middle East, which is very easy to do right now, and the US and others get involved in a more serious conflict, Kim Jong will have a great opportunity to catch everyone with their pants down.
We can only hope that events in the Middle East calm down otherwise a South Korean invasion could be likely.

No, The 2 sides have been in a state of war for over half a century and Much worse border skirmishs have occured in the past, during even scarier times, the cold war. Technically speaking we are still at war with North Korea just that nobody is firing. People are always waiting for a war to break out but it's unlikely that it would be a surprise attack by either side, more like a few days or weeks of mounting tensions and then a spark ignites it.

North Korea's total war plan has two components: massive conventional warfare and weapons of mass destruction.
If the US mounts a preemptive strike on North Korea's Yongbyon nuclear plants, North Korea will retaliate with weapons of mass destruction: North Korea will mount strategic nuclear attacks on the US targets.
The US war planners know this and have drawn up their own nuclear war plan. In a nuclear exchange, there is no front or rear areas, no defensive positions or attack formations as in conventional warfare.
Nuclear weapons are offensive weapons and there is no defense against nuclear attacks except retaliatory nuclear attacks. For this reason, North Korea's war plan is offensive in nature: North Korea's war plan goes beyond repulsing US attackers and calls for destruction of the United States.
Kim is no muslim martyr, and any pre-emptive strike on his part, while we're busy defending Israel will be national suicide....therefore, i highly doubt a pre-emptive strike is imminent.

At this point who knows. I don't mean to sound disrespectful. You may be right. The globe is so unstable we are just mistakes away from an all out war. In part I am concerned due to the loss of life. In part I am ready to say go for it and get it all over with. What ever is left will be left. It will settle things for awhile. Just did not think that the pin-head Bush would become the next FDR, he really is not up to the task.

I doubt that would be part of the plan. They are too interested in the status quo. They are at the moment a buffer zone for China and have China's support. They are negotiating in a hard line fashion for the return of food and fertilizer aid. They might like a deal with Iran of missiles for cash or trade, and China might have good reasons to arm Iran in exchange for oil and the increase of pressure on the US in the middle east. China is becoming a very major player.

well we had the last 50 years policing south Korea from north Korea as we have in Cuba. what about them aren't they pals with china no more? maybe they want to spread us out all over and hit us at home. like japan did. we dont seem to worried about borders to much, as far as watching our own.all the country's we are watching seems to have plenty of soldiers against them. Not to many people sneak in to their country's. why? i guess they plain old know there is a price to pay if they do, so they dont. Just like the punks that got a spanking for writing on walls. If they learned that where they grew up they plain and simple would not of embarrassed themselves or our country when they where there.try it in L.A. or Chicago see what the gangs would do.
