I have a bassett hound that has a limp, he still wants to play but he acts like he is in pain. He doesn't walk on his rear leg. If anyone could help I would appriciate it.

Why would you want to give your bassett hound pain?

It's actually safe to give your dog an aspirin (I only do half of one though to be more safe). As long as your dog isn't allergic to aspirin it should be okay and it relieves pain for a short time. I'd hate to tell you to do something if you don't know about your dogs allergies, so please don't give him one if you're not sure. I don't want anything bad to happen to him! This should not be given often, so whoever reads this---don't start giving your dog aspirin all the time! It's just a temporary thing until you can get to a vet.

Of course, if you don't feel comfortable giving your dog aspirin, by all means don't. I've always been told it's safe as long as you don't do it often because, like people, too much can damage certain organs. I've given it to my dogs and they've always been fine. It's really up to you. It's always best to ask your vet for advice before taking anyone elses advice---especially somewhere like here where you really don't know if people have any idea what they're talking about!

You can safely give the dog buffered Asprin. AKA Bufferen. dose him according to what you would take. Example If you weighed 150 pounds and the maximum for you is 6 tablets in 24 hrs. Then the maximum for a 75 pound dog would be 3 tablets in 24 hrs.

I have a 100+ pound Lab/wiemeraner cross that I dose equivelent to myself. But only use buffered Asprin. It's not as hard on their stomach.

No, because human pain killers can be very harmful to dogs. Do not give the dog anything. Get him to a vet as soon as you can.

my vet told me to use children's tylenol or adult 81 ml asprin for my 40 lb. dog after he was neutered. i am sure quantity varries by weight. i just gave my dog one adult 81 a day because i already had those. it made him forget about his pain and get a little hyper.

you should call your vet for advice before you do anything.

Give him a tylenol. It won't hurt him, it will just take away the pain.
