There are several methods:
1. Sleep during your flight
2. If you are travelling somewhere that has a major time difference from where you started, try to keep awake through the whole flight! Or try to sleep closer to the times you would sleep at your destination. This is not very easy though
3. What I do is, after I arrive at my destination, I try to keep awake during the day as much as I can, and try to sleep at the regular time. It maybe difficult to stay awake during the day the first day, but if you overcome it you will be fine in 2 days! :)

Jetlag is your body's clock being out of kilter to your surroundings. Clenching toes, etc. is all garbage.

You overcome your jet lag by getting your body used to the new time zone via sleep and hydration.

It REALLY helps if you keep your fluids up while flying (no alcohol, no carbonated beverages) and immediately on landing (my first stop is always to get a bottled water). The air is very dry in an airplane.

I typically stay on East Coast time. So if I go to California, I'd wake up at 4:30am (CA time) and go to bed at 9:00pm (CA time). This is actually not that difficult to do and I don't get jet-lagged either when I get to CA or when I get home.

If I need to adjust my time, I'll stay up later a day or two before my flight, so then the jet-lag isn't so pronounced).

You can't overcome it. Jet lag will win every time. So don't try to fight it TOO hard. But you can lessen its effects.

Avoid Alcohol. Sleep on the plane. When you arrive at your destination, try to get as much sunlight as possible. If you feel tired, sleep. And finally, never ever make important decisions whilst jetlagged.

"Well let's see ,there are the over counter drugs, such as Dramamine, Tylenol pm, Advil pm (which is new on the market), Night Quill. (or) you can get prescribed medication, such as Prozac, Zanx,lithium,etc. (or) you can have a couple of cocktails before you arrive to help you sleep, the last resort would be not to fly.

I'm a flight attendant and the last thing I (or) the crew wants(or) needs is to have to deal with a nervous flyer, and have to divert somewhere, it just makes it an inconvenience for everyone involved, so please be sure to weigh your options, because remember it's Not just YOU alone on the flight you do have other PAYING customers who would like to get to their destination, without your Very preventable inconvenience...

Have a safe flight, and remember Buckle you seat belt, and Have a Nice Flight...

Sleep while flying. Wherever you arrive, try and stay up as long as possible to the next early evening and then go to sleep. You'll be wicked exhausted and sleep through the night and get up close to correct time. It'll still take you a few days to really get oriented, but this technique gets you close quick no matter which direction you fly.

Fly east only. You get Jetlag from flying west (longer day).

Before you leave try to get on the destination time by:

Adjusting your sleep by getting up or going to bed an hour or two early/late depending on whether you are flying east or west.

Adjust your meals to coincide with arrival destination times and DON'T eat on the aircraft just because they serve food. Only eat at destination meal times..

Don't drink alcohol on the flight and limit any drink on arrival.

Avoid caffeine on the flight and on arrival for a few days.

On arrival try to get out and walk.

Before going to bed on arrival try to do adopt the same routine as at home.

Jet leg is just that your routine has been turned upside down, try to get back into your normal routine asap on arrival.

I had heard of a method (which sounds farfetched, and to be honest I don't really believe in it myself) which involves shining torches on the back of your knees to reset your body-clock. Don't want to look like an idiot with torches on your knees? I recommend sleep. Nice and simple!

Sleep on the plane, the sooner you adapt to the new time zone, the better. Also drink lots of water, you'll feel more alert when you land.

Pro plus tabs with vodka and red bull until its your normal time to go to bed dextrose tablets on top is a good help also.
