Not much. I have a 1gig card for my 8mp camera and for the most compressed (poorer quality) I get about 200. But if you love photography you shouldn't use such settings. For better quality, choose tif/raw/SHQ/Extrafine take your pick depending on the camera you have. I usually use SHQ. (Slight compression) And I get about 100 pix in a 1 gig card. And with tiff I get about 50ish. So with only a 256 card? eh like I said, not much. I say get a bigger card. =) So you can go shoot happy! Wee! =)

Take a look at the size of the file you are recording and divide the 256 by that number.
In the best quality jpeg format your camera will allow a file that is 8 mb when open will take up about 3.4 Mb on the card so on a 256 Mb card you will be able to hold up to 75 images.

It depends on your specific camera and the camera setting for image quality.
With an 8MP CoolPix 8700, a high resolution jpg is 2.5MB, so you could fit 100 pictures on a 256MB card.
Shooting RAW however, each picture was a whopping 12MB!

relies upon on the known and length of image you opt for on the digital camera. while you're taking smaller sized photos with in basic terms a common high quality shot, you will get many extra photos than in case you place the known placing to terrific and take extra desirable photos. i might evaluate getting an 8 GB card. that's what i take advantage of and it holds fairly a good style of p.c...

at high quality compressed, figuring about 4 meg per shot, about 60 shots, if you put it into raw mode on your camera, if it supports it, probably closer to 10 (raw is an uncompressed format)
My 8.2 megapixel Canon 20d gets 1000ish shots at high compressed on my 4 gig microdrive
