Depends on your lifestyle really. German shepperd are pretty sophisticated loyal dogs and they will protect you from harm. St Bernards however, are really good at digging you out of the snow and their thicker fur can keep you warm too when you're cold.
They're both protective animals, and I really think that you need to go actually try meet these two dogs in person so that you can judge better on what fits your personality and lifestyle. Maybe that one dog will warm up to you and love you, be it German Shepperd or St. Bernard. GO TO THE PET STORE or wherever you are intending to buy\ get a dog AND ASK TO MEET A DOG!!! One will surely appeal more to you than another, and if you can't decide, who said two wasn't bad? :) Well make sure they get along though. The people at the store should be able to asist you.
I hope you find the furry love of your life!!! Good Luck!

German Shepherd You can be either lucky or not lucky with this breed of dog - depending on how well you select your puppy and who you purchase your puppy from. Overall, the german shepherd breed is loyal, intelligent and protective. When you pick your puppy try to select one that has a sound temperment. German Shepherds are often trained to be guard dogs, and they require quite a lot of grooming maintenance and they also require a lot of exercise. If you opt for a German Shepherd dog, obedience training is a must from an early age.
Saint Bernard (St Bernard) We're all familiar with the image of a St Bernard with a little barrel hanging from his collar as he makes his way off to help his master. This breed is very large and heavy, with some weighing in at more than 80kgs. Big boys! Because these dogs are so big they need to know who's boss from an early age - so they need obedience training. Their large size also means that they do not have as long a life expectancy as some other breeds and only live on average from 6-10 years. If you live in a tropical climate it may be best to select a different breed although they will adapt to the hot conditions. These big dogs need a fair amount of space to get around in, so they are suitable if you have a large backyard.

Saint Bernard! If you have kids, They will love it and the dog will love them. They are gentle and very loving, yet protective. They need a lot of space, so if you don't have a large yard don't get either of these two breeds. They(St. Bernard's) are fun in the winter. With proper training and the correct harness they can pull a sled very well. Shepherds tend to get weird when they get old. My neighbors had one and it seemed to have something like althymers. It forgot every one and every place. It was not fun for them.

Don't let anyone scare you about either breed, I have two shepherds right now, and they are wimps. They play well with kids, don't snap and the male is older and he is fine - I have also had a saint bernard before and they are cute, but lots of drool. Keep in mind the larger breeds don't live as long and that's kind of sad.

As someone else already said, you need to research and find out which one suits your lifestyle better. That said, here's some general information about both breeds: (By the way, we have a German Shepherd and love her dearly.)
German Shepherd--avg. weight, 65-100 pounds; intelligent, confident, good for families, need experiences and strong hand for training; can be agressive to other dogs; sheds heavily and needs to be brushed several times a week; need daily walks or become restless and destructive; perfect for suburbs, can cope in city with adequate exercise...Trainability--5 stars; Kid's Pet--3 stars; City living--3 stars.
Saint Bernard: Avg. weight, 150-170 pounds; gentle, calm, generally good with kids and other animals; don't bark a lot; need early and consistent training to quell dominant tendencies; need daily brushing when shedding; need daily exercise; prefer cooler climates; better suited to suburbs and country. Trainability: 3 stars; Kid's Pet--3 stars; City Living--2 stars.
Good luck!

The Saint hands down. Shepperds are too inbred and have flippy personalities, that's why they hold the record for bites (so says the American Kennel Assoc.).

saint bernard....AWWWWW, how cute.
What you really need to do is read about the breed and see which one suits your lifestyle better.
German sheppards are working dogs and need jobs to do, and lots of walks and high energy is basically the breed signature.
I'm not sure on the bernards...but oh they are so super cute as puppies and so cute and cuddly as dogs.
