I am not a great runner at all. I was told that the best way to lose fat is to run. I started out the first day and could only run 1 minute. After a few days I can now run 5 minutes at 4.5 mph (treadmill) or 3 1/2 minutes at 5 mph. I have to alternate between running and walking. Is there anything else I can do to improve my running ability?

You are doing it correctly by working in walk breaks. Running is hard work!! It took me three months before I could run a mile at once. Just be patient. treadmills are great for beginners. Don;t run everyday and don;t push for farther and faster everyday. ride your bike or walk too.

I have lots of running experience, you are doing GREAT!!! YOU ARE A GREAT RUNNER!!

I would not recommend ankle weights, but I would tell you to put .5% incline on the treadmill to simulate a flat outdoor surface...

Good for you! I am a runner as well I started 6 yrs ago and now I could run just about all day if I had the time. Keep going and you will easily pick up speed and endurance! When I started out, I could jog around the block and I kept running everyday going a little further and 3 months later I was going 5 to 6 miles with out stopping. Very great way to lose fat AND get energy! My legs even tend to ache now if I don't run several times a week. They just want to run!
Runners magazine has some great training routines you could follow that are easy to understand. Good luck!

Sounds like you are already on your way to be honest. i lost 60 pounds after the birth of my son. I changed my diet, my own customized diet based on research that I did. I also began a consistent work out routine of walking-fast that is. Eventually I began running and then next thing I knew I was doing 5 miles a day at least 5 days a week. 3 miles of it consistent running and then walking a mile after as well as 1 mile before the 3 mile run. It was not easy honestly to start, but once I started and then saw the results start to show I had to exercise. It just made me feel alive and strong. The key is both diet and exercise. You don't have to stop having the things you enjoy, just in moderation and a consistent work out plan and you will do it. Just be consistent and hang in there. it may take up to a month before you start to see changes. Trust me it will happen. I did it and it was well worth it. Hope this helps you and that you try, it works..

I actually started pretty much the same as u.
I lowered my speed a touch...so I can run a longer amt of time.
I jog at just above a fast walk. I also ran/walked for 30 min
So 3-4x/wk, how about walk at 3.5 and jog at 4.5 for 30 minutes.
On a treadmill it is about 3 minute clips.

I now run at 4.7 for 45minutes. It took me about 3months to get here. Be patient.... it will happen

IN about a week or two add some ankle wights, just a one pounder to start, your in side no one can see you so the look will not mater, it will be like when you started but it will get better real fast, because your getting better, you do not have to do it every day, JUST STICK WITH IT!! it took some time to get in this shape!! and it will take some time to get out of this shape. YOU CAN DO IT!!! bless you.

practice practice practice.
watch what you eat. i see people at the gym running their butt off on the t-mill, then walk across the street and get a soda. very counter productive.
study. check out places like forums.runnersworld.com , and read what they have to say. ask them questions. there are people there that run ulta-marathons.

they are probably more able to answer this question than many people on this forum

I would also check out the site " www.coolrunnings.com " and read their couch to 5k program. it is commenly called "C25K"
Check out their forums as well, if you are really interested.

Keep doing what you are doing. You might try doing some strength training with weights or resistance, every other day. Before you know it, you will be running like a pro.

just do wat ur doing.. with time u'll b increasing ur stamina, and before long u'll b lasting longer and longer! u can't expect to jump on a treadmill and last hours in ur first few months, its a gradual process. so just keep wat ur doing (which is fantastically great!!!) and u'll b there very soon! u'd even b amazed how much u will b able to run and how quickly u can get there if u just stick to it!
