My mother recently died from Wernicke- Korsakoff syndrome, and I know pretty much about it.(mostly an alcohol related disease) What I don't know is if there are many recovery cases. She was 58 and my aunt also appears to have it and is 70. I'm looking for miracle "happy endings" and treatments?

Thiamine (vitamin B1) may improve symptoms of confusion or delirium, difficulties with vision and eye movement, and muscle incoordination. Vitamin B1 may be given by injection into a vein or a muscle, or by mouth.

With treatment, symptoms (such as uncoordinated movement and vision difficulties) may be controlled, and progression of the disorder may be slowed or stopped.

Total abstinence from alcohol is required to prevent progressive loss of brain function and damage to peripheral nerves. A well-balanced, nourishing diet is recommended.

This is thought to be a nutritional deficiency due to lack of thiamine (a B vitamin). Avoidance of alcohol and taking a B-vitamin supplement may help early or mild cases, but once significant brain damage is done there is no cure.
