I was at MCRD San Diego but got out because of an injury. Here are some links about Marine Corps Basic Training.

Its pretty tough.
I went through MCRD San Diego.
Here's the thing, just like anything else in life, if you made your mind up before you start, it wont matter how hard it is.
So do it only if you committed too it. Otherwise you are wasting your time.
You wake up early and drill drill drill all day, then go to the field in like the 6th week, then come back and drill drill drill. In between the drilling are weapons, customs, history, first aid, ALOT of working out-punishment(same thing). They try to break you while teaching you.
The Marine Corps is not a democracy. Many people get there with promises of cars and tuition, and find out it is the military and they have pretty much lost their freedom.
Then they want out.
MOS: F.O. - 2531
9th Marines.
11th Marines.
Oh yeah, at the top of Mount Motherfker, my DI fingered me in the eyeball to make sure i was still conscious. ehehe. ouch.

No it was easy. And only 3 guys in my platoon died from stress related issues.
I was a good runner before I joined; But guys that could not run for hours on end had trouble. Because I was a swimmer I did not have the muscle mass of some guys but my endurance and marksmanship pushed me ahead of most.
No nonsense after 30 days we ran 17 miles a day minimum. On heavy run days we hit 35 miles. Our Drill instructor like Alexander the Great believed running was the single most important combat skill. The troops that can out maneuver the other will win the battle.

Do you honestly think you,--as you are today --could handle a single day of combat in some tropical hell. Of course not. You'd collapse in about an hour.
Basic Training is designed to remove all your fat, shock the crap out of you, punch the hell out of your ego, and turn you into someone who can cope with the madness of a full day's fighting.
They do this to keep you alive. They do it to help you get back to your loved ones. They do it so that you will not think twice when some towel-head pops up in front of you with a gun pointed your way. They do it so that you will be a live and proud member of your unit...a died-in-the-wool American.
It it wasn't hard it would be worthless.

A couple of your answerers are fos. DreamBree says only 1 in 5 make it. That's insane...there wouldn't be a Marine Corps if that's true.
43.... I don't know where this guys been but he's dreaming...there's no way in hell he ran 17 miles in boot camp and 3 didn't die either.

NoName has it right. Some of these people are totally BSing you.
My husband graduated from Parris Island and he said it was the greatest thing he has ever done. They break you all the way down and then build you back up the way they want you. He said it was the hardest thing he has ever been through...and oh yeah they may not be "allowed" to put their hands on you, but they do it anyway and dare you to tell. My husband got punched in the stomach and choked.

My brother went through it. It is the hardest physical training you will ever endure. He was throwing up every day and he was physically fit. Very difficult. He said only 1 in 5 made it through boot camp. If you are dedicated and set your mind to it you can do it.

All I know is that it wasn't easy. My son had his in San Diego in 2000. He doesn't really talk about it much, but he definetly came through it a proud and dedicated Marine. (3 purple hearts)

My partner played that game and says that he'd do basic again if he could, but wouldn't join up again (especially with the way things are going lately...).
