I'd think hating people because they are not your sex/race/colour/religion would be totally unacceptable, yet our society defends this practice so long as it is done through a religious veil.

Catholic Women are not allowed to be priest. Women in Islam are secondary to men. The Jewish faith believes they are chosen by God. Also, many religions preach hate and intolerace towards homosexuals.

Even more outrageous:

Christians think god came to earth, then died and saved our souls in the process. They also think he's coming back, really soon... Strangely, Shites (of Islam) have a similar belief about one of their prophets.

If you agree that " religion perpetuates otherwise dismissible ideas" , then please come and Flush a Holy Book or more of your choice at http://flushaholybook.com

I think first of all you have to list down the dismissible ideas, and also state your criteria of what consitites a dismissible idea. Having done that, you then identify which religion holds to these ideas. And then you establish that these ideas are explicitly taught by the religious texts. Some religious folks can hold ideas that are not taught by their religious texts, so you want to differentiate that. I think if you have done all the above, your question would have been very much changed, or at least your conclusion. Who knows, you may even flush your original question down the toilet!

Excellent points, but I don't agree with "flushing the baby with the bathwater." :)There are good teachings and truths in with all the dismissable stuff as well. Part of being a thinking person is discerning and measuring beliefs against the standards of justice and love, which are foundational in most religions. Unfortunately, religion, as well as other systems of thought, will always be used to discriminate and oppress others.
Science has been used to justify racism, to murder, to oppress others, but we're not always hearing how it should be done away with. (Examples: experiments done by Nazis in the name of science on concentration camp inmates and others, Eugenics, the Tuskegee research...)

This is not a question as you are making statements.
The website is kind of stupid ( I do enjoy the stats though).

Humans are stupid and that is why religion exists.
Since stupidity will never go away, religion won't either.

It's useless to argue about it anymore; face what is reality and deal with it.

Yes, they do! They live off of these obsolete ideas by preaching to the ignorants out there. They will have to change their views if them want to continue preaching.

I totally disagree with you about "dismissible ideas" because God is not a dismissible idea....God is a reality.
