I'm making a chocolate birthday cake. The cake is done and is now cooling, but my questions are: Can I ice it now if it's for tomorrow? If so, do I refrigerate it, or leave it out over night? Or should I wait and ice it tomorrow before the event? Thank you so much--it's my very first cake baking experience! :)

I think it will taste better if you ice it tomorrow. Make sure to cover it so it doesn't dry out.

1. Make sure not to ice the cake till it is completely cool. Otherwise the icing will melt.

2. Tomorrow would be best if you have time. If not ice it this evening. You really should refrigerate the cake but keep it covered. If you do not have a covered cake plate, place several toothpicks in various locations on top of the cake and cover with plastic wrap.

Good Luck!

I'm sure your cake will be delicious. You can ice it now or wait. Really depends on how hot and humid it is where you are. If it's hot, don't ice the cake until tomorrow. Just put saran wrap over the cake once it's cooled.

If you do ice it and refrigerate it, be sure to take the cake out of the fridge about 30-45 minutes before serving.

I have been decorating cakes for 21 yrs. IF you put it in the refridgerator cover it. You can keep a cake in a refridge for 7 days. It will not harm your cake in anyway. But if you dont cover it you might get a little moisture on top of the cake which is no big deal. Actually if you put it in the fridge before you icing it. The cake will sit better and will be alot easier to ice. For a smooth iced cake run your knife or whatever you are icing it with under hot water to spread the icing. You can do this several times till the cake is iced. ENJOY! I can promise you that almost every cake you have bought at a bakery has been put in refridge or freezer before being sold. I have worked at Krogers and Wal-Mart and thats what they do. (if you icing a frozen cake your icing will crack)

When are you going to serve it? Tomorrow day or night? If day, then let it cool and ice it tonight. Leave it on a plate on the counter and it should be fine.

If it's for tomorrow night I would let it cool completely and put it in an airtight container or wrap it in plastic wrap and leave it out on the counter. Then ice it tomorrow before the event. I would not refrigerate it at all--a freshly baked cake isn't going to taste as good after you put it in the refrigerator.

Really either way it will be fine if you ice it tonight as long as it's not too hot in your house.

I don't think there is a problem with icing now and leaving in the refrigerator over night. Unless it is a butter cream or other perishable frosting I don't think that there is any need to refrigerate. I wouldn't refrigerate the cake if you don't frost it tonigt. You can always just make the cake and frosting seperately and then frost tomorrow. Just remember that you never skimp on the icing.

Don't ice it if it is warm because the icing will melt and run. Yes you can put it in the fridge, or cover it and leave it on the kitchen counter where the pets and children won't get it.

If you ice it tomorrow wait till it gets to room temperature before serving it because cold cake won't taste as fresh.

Yes, sure you can ice now! Just cover the cake up with plastic wrap and you should put it in the fridge, but it will be okay to leave out as long as you wrap it. You should just wait tomorrow to ice it, or the icing will be a little messed up.

Just as long as you wrap it!

What kind of cake? What kind of icing?
It depends. I have iced cakes and put them in the fridge to keep. The only problem is the plastic wrap sticking to the icing.
Sure you can ice and freeze the cake, but again it depends on what kinds. . . .

You did not give alot of info on the icing of the cake - you can either ice it tonite or ice it tomorrow. If you do ice it tonite I would recommend you refrigerate it - tightly covered overnite!@

Yes, you can refrigerate your iced cake. Cover it with your cake plate cover.
