Eye discharge is common with poodles. Preventing eye staining is difficult. Wiping around their eyes several times a day with warm water is the best option. Most of the tear stain removers say they have to be used multiple times daily for several weeks to see any results. I am a dog groomer and the only way I know to get rid of them is to shave the hair off....which is only temporary as the new hair that grows back will stain.

Be sure to ask your vet about it just to make sure there isn't any medical problem.

The stains are caused by protein secreted from your dog's eyes. Is the discharge clear or like mucus? Your dog could have an eye infection.
The eye pads you are using suck. My bulldogge has the same tear stains and those pads only make his eyes worse! Plain water gently rubbed over the stains everyday will eventually lighten them. Many of those pads really don't get rid of the stain and irritate the eyes even more.
I just bought some eye cleaner from "Dr Foster and Smith" and it doesn't irritate the eye and the stains are fading. You can actually use them to rinse the eyes and to remove the stains! They make the eyes more comfortable and that will help decrease the discharge and that's what caused the problem in the first place.
Hope this helps.

It is common for a lot of small dogs to produce an overflow of tears, which run down their face. Bacteria grow on the tears and stain the fur reddish/brown. They make products like Diamond Eye to wipe the fur with. Check with your vet to make sure your dog doesn't have an infection or blocked tear ducts. :)

Has his eyes always done this. My Llaso's eyes did that once and it seems like the groomer said it was stained that way. She also told me that his saliva would stain him too. He had that reddish tint on his front legs from licking them. So I don't know if there is anything you can do about it. Make sure he doesn't have an eye infection. You should probably call your vet anyway and ask him about it, if he always has it. Maybe your groomer could give you some tips.

This is very normal. Continue to use the pet eye wipes and you can also smear a very small amount of vaseline on the area (but not in the eye!). This will help the tear to not absorb into the pets hair. Have your vet keep this area clipped short.

you can try useing a cotton ball dipped in hydrogenperoxide. this also will work if you dog gets red stains around his/her mouth from the water bowl.
