I have dining chairs, but not a formal table. I was considering using a folding table and dressing it up with formal table linens. Has anyone tried this and how did it turn out?

Yes - my aunt decorated a 60" round card table in her apartment. It looked absolutely beautiful - when she showed me,
Go for it - you don't need to tell anyone what's under the tablecloth!

Another thing, (I saw this on HGTV) you could get a 60" round glass top and see what you can find for a decorative base to hold the heavy glass. You might be able to find a metal base that would work with your chairs. Or a decorative column. Check the HGTV website. I am all for doing the best with what you have until you can afford the dining table you really like. If I had to wait until things were perfect to entertain, I would be one lonely person! Enjoy.

first i would go around to second hand stores and see if you cant find a table that would work and isnt expensive, if the finish isnt great you can refinish easily but if the thing isnt sturdy i wouldnt mess with it unless you know a good bit about bracing things. the light weight folding tables are going to look cheap and just not feel like a substatial table, but the long folding tables with a wood like formica top and heavy bottom that are quite heavy, might work if you disguise them well. On home and garden network ive seen tables made of old doors that looked cool they put a glass top on it to make the surface even.

You know, you have to stay within your own budget. You seem to have a creative mind and with the proper linens I don't see why it wouldn't work. People cover those little cardboard rounds with cloth and no one knows they aren't beautiful tables underneath. Use your imagination, and cover the legs or see that they are covered (cornered to the floor) and I don't see why you couldn't make a really fine lookin table.

A box a package of new shoes came in, salt and pepper shakers, a rolled up placemant, a box with napkins and placemats in it, some loose mail, and a catalogue or two, and a cat I've got to chase off the table!

I think if it's done correctly, it could be gorgeous. The only thing I would worry about is the funky way the legs are, you want to make sure your guests have plenty of legroom and don't get stuck with the table legs between their thighs. LOL

I have done it for a home wedding. It was beautiful, and with fine linen and fresh flowers no one cared.
Especially, me! Happy friends matter much more!

Doesn't sound tacky to me at all - sounds very creative. Ya gotta do with what you have. Sounds like you'll make everything very nice.
