'dre,
Giants offers a lot of content for the money. Specialized bikes seem superior in ride but are just a bit more pesos. Mongoose and Diamondback used to be good but they have regressed a bit in quality. I'd go with the Specialized if you can save some extra for it. Sige muna.

Ok, nice but cheap. Check out Specialized, Cannondale, Trek, Giant. Another options are Ibex (you must buy online, but I heard they have great cs), Iron Horse, Marlin. I don't know how much more expensive stuff is in the Philippines than over in the USA. Also, what's your budget. If you don't have any problem in that, check Titus, Turner, Intense, Yeti, Santa Cruz.
You must consider first which brands are sold in your local bike shops (LBS). That is a big advantage, especially for tune ups and service. You can buy a bike elsewhere, but then expect to pay for every time you need to take it for service (wheel tune-ups, deraileur adjustment, etc.). Some shops offer some free services, depending on the magnitude.
Before going to LBS, formulate to yourself the following questions:
1. How much time do you expect to stay on the bike?
2. Which type of trails you want to do?
3. Do you also plan to ride on paved roads, or only on dirt.
4. Do you like to do more extreme riding, (free riding), just travel long distances, do you need to do lots of climbing, etc..
5. How much money do you have planned for the bike? Consider that you must at least also buy a helmet. Some other stuff you should consider is a spare tube, multi-funtional tool, tire changing tools. Have a desired amount and a maximum.
When looking at the bikes, try them on if possible. The most important stuff in a bike is fit. If it's too large or short, you won't like it.
Depending on your budget, I think that a hardtail is a better option. It will likely have better components that a full suspension at the same price. Don't look at FS bellow 600-700 bucks in the States, new. There might be some exceptions, but likely they'll have a lousy suspension, and be heavy.
Good luck

There's really no "best brand." It all depends on what features and materials you want, and how much you want to pay for them. Some brands that offer a very good value are Gary Fisher, Trek and Marin. I like Marin a lot since they offer steel frames. If you're looking for full suspension rather than a hardtail, Gary Fisher's Cake frames are excellent for the money.

I really loved my Specialized FSR XC Pro. It could handle any XC trails and even some of the more aggressive trails too.

If you like hills go for a KONA. I've been riding one for the last 20yrs and it's still so cool.
