how old is he? Dentists say it's only a problem after age 6, right?
He is comforting himself at night. He's only going to suck for so long and then fall asleep. Leave him alone. Let him have his comfort. It's not harder to break when you get older if you don't make an issue of it and just let him wean himself. Sounds like he's doing a great job at it so far.
I'm strongly opposed to telling kids "big boys do this" etc. First of all, if he's sucking his thumb, chances are he's a little boy. He can see he's a little boy. Don't scare him and pressure him to act like a big boy. Terrible, terrible approach that causes a boy to feel shame about his 'little boy' feelings.
Leave him alone.

A good way of doing it is encouraging the behaviour you want. Tell him that big boys don't suck their thumbs, and big boys get to do things little boys don't.
Think of a fun activity that you can do together that'll make him feel it's worth not sucking his thumb to be able to do.

for my son, we just kept telling him he did not need it and taking it out of his mouth everytime we found him sucking it, main thing was to take the thumb out of his mouth, we never scolded him about it just kept removing it, until one day he just wasn't doing it anymore. His teeth are fine, he stopped sucking his thumb long before he started school at 4. I never put anything on it, to me that seemed cruel.

Leave him be. He will cling to it more if he doesn't feel secure and a parents stress is easily read by a child. Please, please don't put hot sauce on his thumb. What if he rubs his eyes?! Explain that one to the doctor!
