Because they think they know what is best for them, and they are afraid that God will require something of them they don't want to give. It may be that they don't want to give up control of their life. It may be that they know they have a regular (ongoing, habitual) sin in their lives , and that if they surrender to God they will have to give up their habit. What do you trust in??? God always wants what is best for you, and He knows the future, so He is actually the One who should be in control of all our lives.

God helps those who help themselves. I believe God gave me all I would need to succeed, His likeness, a great mind, an adaptable body, and a Free Will

You assume that "God" created us. I truly believe this is not correct, my parents are the ones that create me.
I prefer to trust real people, including me, than an imaginary superior "God". Remember I you don't trust yourself you are realy lost in this world.

Because They are weak. The Sad part is that they don't even trust themselves and not even other people who believe as they do. Paranoid possibly? OH! YES!

I guess we're just not as smart as birds, or even flowers...
Mat 6:26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?
Mat 6:28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:
Mat 6:29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

Maybe because there is no god, and we *can* only trust in ourselves.
Isn't it odd when people repeat religious mythology as if it were fact, e.g. "...God who created them"? There has never been, in all of human history, one single bit of objective evidence nor one single valid argument for the existence of any gods... and theists acknowledge this in their insistence on the virtue of Faith - You have to have faith, because there is no other way to believe in an inevident deity. And yet, completely contradicting yourselves, you make statements about your god as if they were established facts. Barmy :-)

Because we are the ones who work for our money, pay our bills, put food on our tables, raise our families, and do everything for ourselves that keeps us alive and flourishing. God, however, is just an image, an idea, a term used to explain things unexplainable to the logical human mind.

Because they have found that the myth of God doesn't work for them. Once they take responsibility for themselves rather than relying on a fable, their lives get better.
