Depends on more than that. If the arm is across the back and he's got his legs uncrossed or even open, he's showing dominance to the whole room (and complete disregard for her personal space). If his leg is crossed away from her/or his torso is turned away, again dominance, but now directed at her. If he's directioned toward her, it's attraction (romantic or simply likes her mind) and he's open to her. Crossed leg towards her is also a sign than he wants to be in a group of only two........... if at a party, he's either hitting on her, or doesn't like anyone else there.

I have to hope that most people answering this question (which you posted serveral times) are just being sarcastic... Although I did notice that you changed "girl" to "woman" this time. It could mean any number of things in a number of cultures depending on the context. Why such focus on sex and dominance though? These are American presumptions where even personal life is viewed as competitive, manipulative, and opportunistic. Such assumptions make me want to vomit.

Here, I'll make up my own situation:
Clearly her mother just died and her father is just as broken up about it, but, because he is the man, he feels he needs to be the strong one, so he puts his arm around her to console her, even though he might hurt even more inside.

He wants to be closer, but isn't confident enough to put his arm around her shoulders--yet.
