Because our generation and the ones before us have failed miserably in understanding just what exactly it is that we have done to the poor planet. We should be ashamed of ourselves to have left the Earth is such bad shape for the next generations. If we can educate them to care more than we have, they may still have a chance to live decent lives without being cooked by global warming.

Pickalou you make me gag. Earth day is a made up holiday started in the 60's. They ran out of cute slogans such as DOW shall not kill. Wow one day a year to promote goodness to the earth. These poor hapless children should go to a farm and observe what conservation is all about or go deer hunting in the woods. One thing the children understand and promise to do is not raise their children using disposable diapers. It's more about common sense in doing the "Earth" good and laziness in not caring. In other words one day is not going get a child to "understand".

of all the things that it is important for children to understand,
earth day must rank way way down in the list, behind things that are way down the list like "how to balance a check book", "the laws of thermodynamics", and even "how to diagram a sentence".
