In BCA 9 ball rules you have to hit the object ball first and some ball (any) ball afterwards has to touch the rail or it is a "foul"....shooter up gets ball in hand........you are shooting the object ball straight into the side pocket...the cue ball stops in the center not touching any rail....the object ball hits the back of the "pocket" not the rail and comes back to the center....no "rail" is touched.......is this a foul??

Similar circumstances have been debated ad nauseum on some of the billiards newsgroups.

The short answer is, with a literal reading of the rules, yes. However, I don't know of a BCA ref that would apply it in the way it is written. Everyone interprets it more in "the spirit of the law" manner which is to say, nobody would call it a foul.

There was suppose to be a rewriting of the rules last year by John Lewis and the WPA rules committee. It was hoped that this and other inconsistencies would be addressed at that time. For one reason or another, there were few changes to the existing rules and problems like this remain.

So, if you want the answer from up high, email John through his WPA address.

Prince - Ummm, no.

2.11 CLEARING POCKETS
On tables which do not have ball return systems, the referee will remove pocketed object balls from full or nearly full pockets. It is the player's responsibility to see that this duty is performed; he has no recourse if a ball rebounds from a full pocket.

I'll add that, when playing without a referee, it's the shooter's responsibility to clear the balls prior to taking the shot.

As for the design problem, when you began your match, you accepted the conditions of the tables. It's the second rule listed (1.2).

Either way, I would rule no foul. It's simply loss of inning.

Oh, and Josh, listen to straight_shooter. In section 3.11, "A
ball that re-bounds from a pocket back onto the table bed is not a pocketed ball."

I would refer you to rules 3.11 and 3.19 of the BCA's general rules of pocket billiards. Although it doesn't say so explicitly, hitting any part of a pocket with an object ball is judged the same as hitting any part of a rail, even if the ball rebounds onto the table. I've seen this happen during matches and that has always been the convention. Good question. Matt Daniels-Referee BCA Pool League.

This usually happens due to bad table design. Its not a foul to do that. I have the rule book and it explicitly says that if a ball is ejected from a pocket due to other balls filling the pocket or bad table design and no other ball hits the rail will be played from its position. Its ruled as a legal shot. Hope that helps.

NO it is not a foul because the object ball was hit first and then pocketed
