I'm shipping off to the Navy and I just signed a contract with a cell phone provider. Am I going to be able to use it?

I'm on the Mason (DDG-87)

Cell phones work onboard the ship. There are designated areas topside for talking on the cell phone inport (Mason's are the port break and the flight deck).

Underway cell phone use is not authorized, but you can't get a signal anyway. You won't get a signal inside the ship either.

Good luck!

Cell phones have to be with in a few miles of a tower to work.
IF the navy wanted to they could set up a transmitter on their ship and tie it into the satellite networks they use for communications.....
But they would probably need to keep communications under tighter control for security reasons.
My guess would be no way......
Not at sea anyway....
And if they wanted to they could install jamming hardware to prevent unauthorized use whilst in port...... which would make sense as you wouldn't want just anyone if they managed to get aboard to have the capability to send messages/pictures out this way.
And the steel decks would probably block the signals below deck anyway.

The quick answer is NO.
All cell phones relay their signal to a fixed cell tower or bldg site. While in port your fine. At sea, the signal will be out of range. Same as it would be in some rual land areas or national parks. Now Sat. phones are a different story. They beam signals to overhead satelites and thus have worldwide coverage. Find a phone that uses the Inmarsat service.

Have you seen any cell phone towers at sea? May work in port.
Ships use micro wave dishes and ship to shore Radio/FM.

In port, yes, but once at sea, not on your life. NOW, if you have a satilite phone, which runs about 3 bucks a minute, you can use it anywhere in the world. In the Gulf of Mexico, Petrocomm is the key satilite provider for communications

The ships have powerful radar, you don't need one on Navy ship.
