if you computer is 32 bit... im sure it will... if its 64 bit.. it probably won't. unless you have an awesome computer.. im sure you have 32 bit ;)

No. Office 97 isnt compatible with Windows XP. You need Office 2000 minimum.

in short yes, if word 97 standalone is anything to go by.
a p3 with 256mb ram and XP ran word 97 without a problem, although the system was relatively slow.
why use 97 anyway, the new version is free to try from microsoft.com the 2007 version why not try it instead of worrying with an old and out dated version.
