Schools should at least teach tolerance. I am a Lesbian mother of a 15 yr old Lesbian daughter. We live in a small rural town. Overall she has not had too many problems. I have tried to teach her to be patient with ignorant people. I have had to go up to the school and talk to the Principal b/c one time a teacher was talking about how the media can persuade people and she did a entire class period on how "gay people are gross" and she said some very derogatory things. I spoke to the principal and got it straightened out. Since I don't like like the stereotypical Lesbian no one really knows and I don't usually start my conversations with "HI, I'm a Lesbian".
And one time it was very funny when the assistant principal talked with me and he was stammering around about... "umm I don't know how to tell you this or how you will take it,, but umm,, your daughter was caught holding hands with another young lady".
My daughter and I are not trying to "force" our gayness on anyone. We just don't want to be physically hurt or emotionally hurt.
So,, yes tolerance and non violence should be taught.

Only part of our society sees gays as normal and far fewer "recognize or honor them, except gays. In spite of the rhetoric and political correctness that some profess, the vast majority of us instinctively abhor homosexuality and recognize it for the abomination that it is. Every major society that has shown wide spread acceptance of this perversion has collapsed. we are not an exception. Also the demands of our society require that schools spend as much time with the scholastic education of our kids as they can. there is no place and no time to force feed "lifestyle choices" to students, understanding is one thing celebration is quite another. So neutral is too weak a word for your question.

Schools should completely stay neutral. I teach tolerance in my classroom for all groups, no matter if it is based on race or sexual preference. As for gays, I respect them as people, I have several gay friends, in fact my best friend is, but they are all very aware that I don't agree with their lifestyle. As I said, I am a teacher, but I would never be involved in a Gay appreciation day... if that was something all schools began doing, I would stay home on that day.

Schools are for learning and the basics come first. I'm for neutrality however, I do not see a problem with letting high school seniors, and seniors only, having open forums for discussion on heterosexuality and homosexuality. When people go to college they are not segregated and some education before going onto higher education does not hurt.

well i ask myself if i feel threatened by gay people. hmmmm. well a little maybe, but if i think about it, not really so much.... worst case is that the colors of the rainbow make a comeback. schools will stay neutral, on that whole separation of church and state thing. the only reason to be freaked out by gay people is irrational. they don't carry weapons like i thought they might.

School should accept everyone. We should keep celebration out so schools can stay neutral. I think they are just trying to say they do not discriminate. One school had its clubs do gay rites day. But if Christians get Christmas vacation, everyone should have their holidays celebrated.

I don't think there should be any kind of appreciation day for anything or anyone at school. Black History month and Hispanic Heritage month needs to be taken out of schools.
School is a place of learning, not a place to give appreciation to anyone or anything, except for the teachers.
I believe that's what wrong with our school systems toda: we're focusing on the wrong things.

Schools should remain neutral on every cultural group so that no one feels less important than the next.

Teach acceptance. It's our responsibility as a society to make things easier for gay, lesbian and gender non-conforming children.

I believe that it should not be stood for. This is our country, once a soveriegn nation under God. What has become of us? Besides I don't think that God will allow it to continue. I think He will probably end up coming back before their society takes over. Here is the thing to remember though
Love the sinner and hate the sin. We can't hate them, we have to hate what they do.
