For a tourist. Please don't give me some long cut and paste. I'd like a simple answer based on personal experience. Ten years ago I crossed the border into Canada with only a New York State Driver's license but I've heard that since 2001 you now need a passport. Thanks in advance.

nope, i can go into the US without a passport so it's probably the same thing vice versa.. it's not until the end of this year that you'll need a passport. so long as you bring your driver's license and maybe a backup piece of ID you should be ok

I just returned from Ontario. We crossed at the Peace Bridge Buffalo/Ft. Erie. A passport is not required, but as of right now, it will be required in Jan. 2007.

They will ask for a photo ID and you need to have either a voter's registration card or birth certificate as back-up. We usually get asked for the birth certificates on the way back into the US not on the way into Canada.

On one that episode of that 70's show, nobody who was a US citizen needed a passport to cross the border. I have a friend who travelled to Niagra Falls and then on to Canada and they didn't need to bring anything either. But I don't know if that will change in 2006 like that person said, if they do change it that would be pointless.

It either just changed or will in the next few months. Get a passport and save the risk of losing your original birth certificate. If you don't need one now (the state department seems to change its mind a lot so I would call them directly), you need your original birth certificate with a raised seal.

You can still get in with a birth certificate and a drivers license. But it is so worth it and alot easier to get a passport.

We just went over the weekend. They only asked for driver license and where we were born. I had taken the birth certificates but they never asked for them. But to be safe i recommend that you do take them along. Canada was great!

If you drive, then you can use your USA drivers license (until end of 2007, then you need a passport to drive there & come back)

If you fly, you need a passport

Passport is always good to have, it eliminates any surprises. Also due to the tightening of security you will need a passport.

@ the end of 2006 that will change, so go before 2006 is over.
