Captain Atheism: I didn't make any such comparison. Perhaps you should read more carefully.

Myself yes. I don't believe in deities but neither do I go and try to take swipes at them either. I don't believe everyone should believe as I do and nor would I ever expect them to. I feel that intolerance only breeds more intolerance and I try not to be a part of that. If we were meant to have only one system of belief on this planet it would have happened long before now and we'd not be having these discussions.

As the last answerer posted, when the last person I spoke to made that comparison (you), I responded the same way. Comparing the chance that there is really a god, to the chance that a beaker of liquid is poisonous, is not a valid comparison. And you should know better. You really should look up the definition of "strawman".

It strikes me as an obviously false comparison, for it doesn't seem unreasonable that there could conceivably be a beaker of possibly poisonous liquid.

If you had asked if I thought it was bizarre to compare what most religious people feel God to be to a beaker of possibly poisonous liquid, I'd still say no. —Remove the word "possibly," and we've got a deal.

Poisonous to some, calming to others.
