Wikipedia and most dictionaries claim Mormon should only refer to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Should splinters of the group be called something else?

The UN Declaration on Human Rights defines a person's religion as whatever they say it is. I don't think the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints owns the term Mormon. If people in the FLDS and other churches want to call themselves Mormon too they should have that right. After all, the splinter groups also think they are the true Mormons. Who's to say they're not?

Nobody "owns" the term Mormon. The leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints have encouraged us to refrain from using the term to apply to the Church or its members. My opinion is that anyone who reads and believes in the Book of Mormon can be termed a Mormon, whether a member of the LDS Church, the Community of Christ, or any of the many other groups that have broken off.

Yes, the term Mormon only applies to LDS folks. The church's correct and official name is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Off-shoot groups are not Mormon.

Only members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are to be termed Mormons, a nickname bestowed based on a prophet's name living on the American continent before 386 A.D.

The Reformed Church is no longer Mormon as they now call themselves Community of Christ and no longer use the Book of Mormon as another testament of Jesus Christ in their doctrinal teachings.

No splinter group from the main Church headquartered in Salt Lake are termed Mormons because they broke away and wished to follow their own doctrines of extended polygamy, not sanctioning the edict from President Wilford Woodruff in October 1890.

Mormons are Latter Day Saints. We are not "Joseph smith followers" we are not polygamists. Joseph Smith was the first prophet for the church. The polygamists are Fundamentalists. They say they are Mormons but they are not. They belong to the FLDS church. Which is a sick church. Their leader is Warren Jeffs, the guy that the FBI is looking for. But trust me, they have nothing to do with the Mormons of today. believe me, I am a Mormon. And if anyone thinks differently, or has any questions about it, email me. I'll tell you the truth.
