Sure... make it as simple as possible and limit the time you meditate to just a few minutes at first and gradually increase the time.
Some people use a "mantra" that they repeat over and over example "OHM" or some other simple phrase, repeat that phrase over and over (whatever phrase you choose) The phrase is used to keep your mind from wandering away and focused on a clear blank thought. Look up meditation on the Internet and get ideas from others... Mix and match the best ideas that works for you.
“When meditation is mastered, the mind is unwavering like the flame of a lamp in a windless place.”

"Those who eat too much or eat too little, who sleep too much or sleep too little, will not succeed in meditation. But those who are temperate in eating and sleeping, work and recreation, will come to the end of sorrow through meditation.”

But they're the only times I've ever known
And I believe there is a time for meditation
In cathedrals of our own.”

*** I hope these quotes help, I have trouble calming my mind too, by answering your question and doing a little research- I have been calmed a bit...Thanks.***

I find it easier to meditate in a chair, rather than in a cross-legged pose on the floor. It's important to be comfortable, so you're not distracted by your discomfort.
Sit with your back straight, not leaning against the back of the chair, and your feet flat on the floor. Hands can rest on your legs, with palms up (upward meditation) or down (focuses on grounding). Eyes should be softly closed.
Breathe in and out through the nose only. Make your breaths approximately 3x longer and deeper than your average breath, and focus on it inflating your body, traveling up from your belly to your chest and finally your throat. During the exhale, the breath travels back down the reverse way.
To your specific issue of your mind not clearing very easily, here's a trick that works for me. Every time your mind travels off into a distracting thought, imagine the thought is in a bubble. Watch the bubble float away, and the thought gently goes away with it. You're not forcing it out, or punishing yourself for the distractions. You're acknowledging them, then setting them free. I also have one of those minds that has a constant pitter patter, and this technique really helps.
Good luck, enjoy, and namaste! :)

-have a seat in a comfortable chair
-close your eyes
-breathe in and out - concentrating on your breath
-breathe for 10 minutes, trying to stay focused on your breath.
-Don't worry if your mind does not calm because the mind by its very nature is not calm.....when you notice that you have gone off track and are thinking about something else....ease your mind back and refocus on your breath....do this without judgement or self-criticism.....just keep pointing your mind back to your breath....over and over again.....see if it makes a difference!
