Probably because his arguements were based on the Bible (I.E.: the letters written by the original Apostles) instead of arguing based on some vague human "tradition".

The catholic church at the time was so proud, and had forgotten the reason they existed, that when someone gave a different opinion than what they were doing. They immediately excommunicated them. They had lost their focus.

he just got rid of all of Catholicism's stupidest earthly life rules, but kept the main beliefs of spiritual christianity. and also got rid of the false-idol worship of Mary.
