When I felt very important, which was a long time ago, this question was forever on my mind.
Gradually I came to see the unmitigated arrogance of such a thought. After a while, it even became humorous.
Imagine, a species which in cosmic terms barely constitutes a surface irritation on its planet, claiming to have a "purpose" other than life itself. Absurd.
This ridiculous narcissism is just another disguise with which we hope fool the approaching darkness. In the end our hubris is just that, inverted fear.
To paraphrase some better thinker:
A man said to the Universe; "I am here!"
And the Universe responded: "And that poses no sense of obligation for me."

because we are the realization of the universe, we are the wanting of consciousness in the universe. We are life and life is wanted because we are, therefore we are all meant to be here.

to see if we're worthy enough to go to heaven by following, obeying God's rules. and having love for God, since adam and eve ate the apple form the tree and made us all suffer.
