Don't forget that Joseph was visited by an angel telling him that Mary was carrying the Son of God! ^_^
That would make it a little more convincing than just having her word to go by...

Apparently, Joseph also took it on faith (at least to some degree) that Mary was telling the truth; as he wanted to put her away privately.
