There are no tattoes on her ears. The rescue group said they won't take her if she's a greyhound/coonhound mix, but how do I tell the difference?

Obviously I can't take her to the vet at 8pm. I need specifics!

Go online, and, depending on the age of the dog, you should be able to find some good pictures. Some greyhounds are not tattooed! In the links I posted, you can surf through the site and check out some of the posted pictures. For really quick reference, go to greyhound lifesavers and click on available dogs.
Greyhounds have very fine, smaller ears than a coonhound, and a greyhound will be lighter and more long-legged than a coonhound. A grey's paws will also look more like little hoofs than regular dog paws.
Check out greytalk and register. If you go online there, you can post a pic of the dog and people will be able to tell you right away. Even if the dog isn't a pure grey, you will also be able to find people/rescue groups willing to help you place him in a good, loving home.
Good luck!!!

Send some photos to the rescue group. They are the ones that will determine if they think the dog is something they will take.

It would be really hard to tell by looking unless you know what you are looking for. A vet may say it is a Greyhound, but the rescue group may look at it and say NO WAY and not take it. They would know better than the vet on this occasion!!!!

Guessing a mixed breed dog's breed is always tricky and is never an exact science. You can tell if it's a purebred greyhound or not just by looking at picture of a greyhound and seeing if it looks exactly the same (other than color of coat). If it doesn't--not a greyhound. Anything other than that would just be guessing, even from supposed "experts".

Also, big BOO for a rescue group who won't take mixes of their breed. Almost every rescue group I know of takes mixes if part of the mix is the breed they rescue.

Go to www.akc.org. You can look up breeds there. Greyhounds are VERY distinctive breeds, physically. Among other characteristics, they usually have really soft coats. Even if you don't see a tattoo, take her to the vet tomorrow to have her "scanned". Often, people have microchips inserted under their pets skin for identification. Your vet will know what I'm talking about. Till then, treat her nicely! She's likely scared stiff in her new environment. Give her lots of love and see if you can find a home for her before you pass her off to a rescue group or (God forbid!) a shelter. They're often overburdened and underresourced. Good luck, and give her rubs for me!

Greyhound crosses often have the same skinny, long body as a purebred greyhound, and often the long, thin snout with a thicker neck. There's no "sure" way to tell, unfortunately. If the greyhound rescue club won't take her, there are many other dog rescue groups (like the SPCA for one) who will. I would recommend taking her to the SPCA so if she does have owners, they can find her. Good luck!

If Coonhounds are rare in the region where you found her, she's probably not a coonhound mix. Either way, you need to have an experienced fancier of the breed evaluate her to know for sure.

Also check her inner thighs for tattoos, and have her scanned to see if she's microchipped. If you're lucky, you'll be able to ID her and return her to her rightful owner.

Look up some pictures of greyhounds on the net. If the dog you found looks the same, then its a greyhound.

Address the dog and say........ Lady dog what kind of a dog are you? Are you coon hound dog or greyhound dog?

See what she Say's.
Then look over your shoulder for the men in white coats. Seriously I wouldn't know either. Good Luck
