I find that people these days are CHEAP!!! If you cannot afford to tip then don't go out to eat and have somebody WAIT on you, or order food to be DELIVERED TO YOUR DOOR. It is ridiculous how many people young and old I find tipping 10% or sometimes less. I mean if the service was HORRIBLE fine...but I was waiting tables yesterday....really slow night....meaning all my tables got the best of the best service. I got $5 dollars on a $100 check????!!!!!! Please people.....TIP YOUR SERVER. What do you all think about this?

i'll tip some1 who delivers food tomy house, but as far as going out to eat, NO WAY! i'm sorry, i bet your a waiter too, huh? oh well, i just dont believe in it. i have been down and out before, with no work at all, no money, nothing...... but when i did get a job, i didnt go looking for a waiter's position! you wanted that 'career' , so now deal with it! how sad of a person are you to rely souly on the generosity of other people? you want to work for $6.50 an hour and "HOPE" that some 1 tips you, thats your call. not my bad

haha wow your obviously one of those people... whats wrong with being a waiter. Working four days a week as a server you can easily make $500-$600 a week?? Thats a pretty decent living for a single person. I'm also not bitching about my "career"...I enjoy my job...its cheap a**holes like you I'm bitching about. Servers don't work for $6.50 an hour jackass....more like $2.50. Stay at home next time...can I get your physical description to warn others?

Also...I'm not saying you should tip well if you had bad service. Yes I am a waiter...that doesn't mean I don't HATE bad servers. I know their are many of them. But if everything was at least satisfactory if not above 18% is ideal in my book.

I eat out a fair amount.

If I spend $100 on dinner, I'll tip $20. If I finish my beer and I'm sitting arounf 10 minutes with nothing to drink or eat, they lose some. If I'm sitting around for a really long time after I'm done and the wait staff won't bring me a check, the lose some. If they screw up my order they lose some. If they are really unhappy, they lose some. If the food is no good I just dont come back.

If they are really exceptional and do something for me above and beyond the call of duty or in some way I specially connect with them, I will tip them more.

I'm sure there are a lot of cheap people out there.. Then again, I'm sure there are a lot of bad wait staff....

I agree with you 100% (and I'm not a waiter). I always leave a bit more than 20% if a waiter is good because I know how hard it is to work in the restaurant industry. If a waiter isn't performing well, I ask him/her if they need any help (that usually improves the service). Sorry you have to deal with all these cheapskates. I don't think people realize how little money you make per hour.

I tip when the service I receive warrants a tip.

The other night, I went out to eat and was made to wait for what seemed like forever (I got overlooked, even after my order was taken). I finally requested my food to go. But from the moment I walked in to the moment I left, nearly an hour had passed. When I got home, I realized that my syrup wasn't included (I ordered pancakes). See, that doesn't warrent a tip. And needless to say, the waitress didn't get one (and was indifferent about the whole ordeal). Now, I'm a pretty understanding person, but I won't reward tacky service. That $5 tip you received (from a $100 tab) was very wrong, and you have a right to be annoyed. Nine times out of ten, I tip 15% of the total bill. But the bottom line is that tips have to be earned.

i do no longer. I in basic terms tip people who're offering a luxury provider. Like eating place/bar servers, hairstylists, estheticians, the guy that pumps your gas.. If I order takeout from a sit down eating place then I tip with the aid of fact i be responsive to the server has to tip out the kitchen for the nutrients. yet i do no longer tip at Starbucks or rapid nutrients places.

Wow that sucks getting 5 for $100!! IT should have been like 20 -25!!

We are good about tipping... we tip depending on the service we get... which is usually good where we go... so it it is like 30 we usually tip 5-8$ and if it is below than the server is working for 5... but if it is more than 30 then we do it depending on what we have extra and how good they were... I have never had to tip over 10 bucks though., we don't go to ritzy places...

That is pretty pathetic. I generally tip 15-20%, unless the service doesn't merit it. What I don't understand is some of the other tipping customs. At a restaurant, you pay for food but you get service on top of it. Therefore, you pay a little extra to the server. I don't get why you should tip for a haircut, but people do all the time. Same for a cab ride. That time, you're paying for the service itself. Why should you be expected to add on to that?

I always tip, even for very bad service. If you leave no tip for bad service, they may think you forgot...but to leave a very low tip sends a clear message. Only twice have I ever left a single nickel. I will tip 20% or more for attentive but not overly intrusive service...especially if the server shows awareness of the special needs of a two-year old at the table.

I think that the server should be tipped based on the service given. If I see my server only when they take my order and then when they bring the bill that server will get no tip from me. If my server is rude or feels they should goof around with the other servers instead of paying attention to their customers they won't be tipped well.
Your right though. Some people are rude. The rule of tipping is not higher than 10 percent of the total though.
